Would you raise a Parsonii?

i would do it if i had the space for sure. though even i would rather have a tavetana. parsons just arent worth it to me.

Yes, and No, I would if I had the knowledge of raising this species, the time and space, and all the right supplies to care for them. and also in my dreams . and No, because I know that I wouldn't be able to take care of this species at this time of my life because I'm only 16. maybe when I'm older. :) also because they are very expensive.

Would you raise a Parsonii?

Only if you have lots of patience, and time. Years! if done right. I have 4 years in, I think another decade or maybe lifetime will do.

But I've heard enough stories of new keepers who get in over their heads. And quickly have a vacant enclosure. Just the other day, I heard of someone in the southeast who had one die :(. I also think of last spring when a couple of new imports got overheated and died in a greenhouse, down south of me. So before you have visions of getting a single animal, or pair (unrelated of course ) and mating them. Make sure your ready to invest your time and energy towards these special creatures. Or any chameleon for that matter.

 Don't believe everything you think.

Let's say money to get one is not an issue, could you handle it? I can't, I do not have enough experience and space to hold another big cage...so what about you?...

Given that money to obtain is not an issue - then money for space/time/materials should not be an issue. Husbandry skills? That is a whole 'nother issue. And I possess neither the money or skills to take on the challenge.

And as others have noted - there are a lot of other really cool little species out there to work with.

I've had the honor to meet them in the wild along with other species. Yes, they are majestic, beautifully colored, sort of "wise" looking, and some can be very gentle like melleri (there were a couple of females who were out for blood!). But they were not my favorite...give me a pair of willsii, bifidus, xenorhinum, or nasuta. Lots of rostrals in a small package.

The more animals I work with the larger and larger their captive habitats get. If I couldn't give a parsoni a whole room to itself filled with trees I wouldn't do it. Watching them use their territory is the best part of any creature.

I've always kept some sort of bird and find they do best when allowed daily free flying in the house (as opposed to being wild in the first place of course). The cages offered for common pet birds have never seemed right to me. Built mostly for the convenience and decor of the typical home. Wrong approach. My motmots have an 8'x8'x8' aviary, but they are loose when I am home. The aviary isn't pretty but it's as large as the room permits. Makes all the difference to both of us.

Been there done that...But if I had the opportunity to do it again i get rid off my wife first..:D

Personally, I don't see any good reason to justify supporting the black market trade in protected wildlife that reproduces very poorly in captivity. If a small, legal quota was established I would have a slightly different view but either way, the numbers taken from the wild will always be higher than those hatched in captivity and that is not "saving the species."

I agree this species is not for the pet trade. Only experienced keepers with intent to breed them should have them. I believe with the small numbers that are sold each year a breeder that can hatch a clutch would meet the demand and reduce the amount imported.

Why would that not encourage more people to purchase the smuggled ones to "attempt" to breed them, also? Most of the folks on this forum have never seen one in person, but I'd bet 90% want them. I'm afraid the only thing that would be reduced would be their selling price if more were available.

Absolutely. Once that clutch is sold out, what do the people who were really excited about them but missed out do? Give up, wait another 5 years, or buy the closer to breeding size imports?

Kent67 your right once the clutch gone it all about the demand.. It sad but true like all rare animal's if the price is right they will be for sale on the black market..I had the pleasure of working with these beautiful animals all us owners just thought about breeding these animals in captivity .. But how many of them live pass 10 years???? In captivity???:(

Well, how far does the "black market" arm goes to? I am in California, could a C. Parsonii end up this far? If I know of a pair for sale, with shady origins and breed them, could the offspring be sold without any problems from the feds or any other agency?

Many of them that come with legal documents are indeed smuggled. They are smuggled to places like Indonesia where one might be able to pay off authorities for legal documents or have legal documents for a pair before the ban and pass them off as offspring from those. Once they have legal papers they can end up anywhere.

Hmmm...I see...that is something I did not think about...
