Your Chameleon - Bearded Pygmy, female, age unsure.

How long has it been in your care? I have had Mama for approx. 3 months.

Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon? Very rarely, only to check on her health.

Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? Small crickets, mealworms, wild caught pesticide free small moths etc. What amount? She eats at least 2 crickets per day, sometimes seems to ask for more. How are you gut-loading your feeders? Flukers Orange Cube and Flukers High Calcium Cricket Diet.

Supplements - Per articles I studied before I purchased Mama, I do not dust as the articles stated they do not need as much as the larger chams. I heavily gutload before feeding however.

Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? I mist 2-4 times a day depending on work schedule and I don't have to mist long. Her enclosure stays between 70-90% humidity. Do you see your chameleon drinking? I never see Mama drink, but she is always a good color, her eyes are never sunken and she is active during the morning and night. However she loves to rest in her plant during the afternoon.

Fecal Description - Consistency is like a little brown ball with white attached. Mama has never been tested for parasites and she shows no bumps on her skin.
History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you. She had laid eggs during transit in the mail to me. I placed them in the terrarium with her in the substrate, but they never did hatch. They were hard and dented when I took them out of the carton she came in. They did swell, but never really grew. Turned a bit of color, then nothing. Just were like cheese inside after about 3 months.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage Mama is in a Zoo Med terrarium 12X12X12. Screen top and front vent holes for temperature gradient air flow.

Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? Reptiglo 2.0 UVB. What is your daily lighting schedule? Approx. 12 hours per day.
Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? 70-80 degrees. Lowest overnight temp? 62 degrees. These are the temps I read that beardeds should be kept at. How do you measure these temps? With a Exo Terra digital combination Thermometer/Hygrometer.
Humidity - What are your humidity levels? 70-90% How are you creating and maintaining these levels? Misting 2-4 times a day. What do you use to measure humidity? See above.
Plants - Are you using live plants? All live plants, Ivy and Dracaena.

Placement - Where is your cage located? In a corner of my living room by a window, but to the side, not in front of it. Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? No, my house is fairly quiet and Mama has never been very shy. She always seems very curious. At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor? 4 ft.
Location - Where are you geographically located? Camas, Washington near the Columbia River Gorge.

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about. I am not really too concerned, just a little nervous because it appears Mama may be going to lay eggs again. She is almost covered by a tunnel she has dug in the substrate. Per recommendations her terrarium substrate is 1/4-1/3 inch gravel covered by plastic mesh, approx. 1 inch of eco earth with sphagnum moss, leaves that were baked for sterilization and crushed a bit, and lots of twigs and a vine for climbing and basking. Though she does not really care to bask often, which I understand is par for this species. I also had a male with her, but they sent me two different types of pygmies. Mama is a bearded and they sent me a spectral male. He recently passed away. I am totally unsure why as his feces was proper size, color, and consistency. He ate well. Now, four days since he passed Mama is burying herself in the substrate, and appears to be digging stuff out. She is very plump, so I am assuming she is gravid and ready to lay. I know they can carry sperm for a while, but I was never sure if she would mate with a spectral, so I am assuming she is either carrying prior sperm or the eggs will be infertile. I have read I should remove the eggs, but I would rather they hatch in the terrarium, unless this is a bad thing. Any ideas anyone? I also have some questions on my female Jacksons but I will post with another question sheet for her. I am a newbie, but I studied long and hard to make sure I could provide properly for my sweeties before I got them. I joined and read everything I could on this forum as well as other care sheets and articles, including the cham ezine. I hope I am doing everything correctly because I love them dearly. Am I just a nervous new cham owner?

So far so good. Looks like youve got everything perfect. One of my pygmies laided eggs on 5/30/2012 she laid 3. One shriveled up on me and it had the cheese like stuff inside like you descibed, but the other two are still full so iv got my fingers crossed. As far as leaving the eggs in the tank for my crested geckos I leave the eggs and they hatch fine so I see no reason why the pygmy eggs would be any different. As long as you keep the substrate moist not wet or dry you should be fine.

Oh good! I guess I am just a very nervous newbie owned by my pygmy! I feel like I practically live and breathe my pygmy, lol. I just love the diversity and creativity of God's creatures and I want the very best for the ones who share my life.

I LOVE MY LITTLE GUYS TOO.

Awesome pictures! Thanks so much for sharing them with me. Once Mama has quit laying I will see if I can get some pics to share. I can sure see eggs behind her! It looks like she may be done and is trying to cover them up. I am so excited, but also afraid they may not be fertile. Do you know if she would have bred with the spectral? Or do they not breed other than with another bearded? Will let you know how many eggs when I can see them all. My Mama looks exactly like your female in the last picture.

I believe She will lay eggs even if she hasnt mated. I think the breadies and spects live in the same areas so I wouldnt think they could crossbred. Id love to see a pic of her in here tunnel, I caught my female covering the hole but did see her in the tunnel.

She is already out of the tunnel but she had just backed herself halfway in and then I could see her having contractions, I guess you call it. When she was out, she had turned around and was just looking at her eggs like, Gee, is that what I just did? It was really cute. Now I am a little worried though because she has placed her body sideways over the opening...wait, now she is looking in at the eggs again. It sure didn't take her very long did it? I will try to get some pics now...of course my camera battery is low!

How do I post a picture to the thread? I can't figure out using the insert image icon what my url is?

Oh how cool that you saw her lay! I've still never seen mine dig or lay. I did have one clutch hatch in the cage because I never removed the eggs and the mama pyg tried to eat one of the babies. :( They're so small I guess she just saw movement and went for it - she crushed its little head and it did not survive. That's the downside to not removing them. Since you know exactly where they are I would remove them. It's so much fun to have eggs to check on and then you can watch them hatch! I think one of my females laid eggs last week, but I'd have to practically take apart the whole thing to find them.

It has been awesome to watch! She actually layed beside them for a while after laying. Then she would turn around and look at them as if so proud, then lay next to them again. Now she has covered them up. I just checked on her and it looks almost like she is trying to dig another tunnel? She looks so tired, and I worry about her. If I take the eggs out, is there anything else I can use besides perlite. I don't have any. Also how do I keep them warm and at what steady temperature? I so want this clutch to hatch!

Wow, she is so facinating to watch. Now she is back on top of the tunnel pushing the moss down on top of the eggs! I am so nervous about all her actions. I really think she is actually trying to dig another tunnel. She still looks kinda chubby. But it is as if she doesn't like to be away from the eggs. I just can't tell.

She will make sure to hide any evidence of her eggs being there. It an take her quite awhile before she is happy. Do you have her lights on a timer its important that she has a stable day and night cycle?

She is finally happy with where they are hidden. I do not have a timer, but I try to make sure there is a 12-13 hour day night cycle.

Oh, and I wanted to ask...I have a clean up crew in the terrarium of sow bugs. Do you know if they will bother the eggs?

Sow bugs eat decay.. Idk if they could chew threw an egg for safety I'd remove the eggs. REMEMBER DON'T TURN THEM OF TMHE BABY WILL DROWNED! pick them up and place them in an a separate container exactly as they are!

To post a picture you need to upload them to photobucket, photobucket will then give each image a direct URL that you use in the picture button.

I would just take them out. Many people use perlite, hatchrite, or vermiculite for incubation. You could also use whatever is in the terrarium, but it might be more difficult to keep the moisture right. They may or may not be fertile depending on when she mated last/if she mated at all prior to you having her. If you take the out you will know if they are fertile soon enough, but in the tank you won't know for quite a while. The eggs will not be a hybrid though.
