Young panther chewing sticks because...?

I've had my new panther for four days, and today I noticed him chewing a stick (Nandina domestica). No other symptoms, eating like a champ and gaining weight. He is going for his baseline vet check Tuesday. I'm not really worried about it, just curious if this is something panthers do?

This is common among panther chameleons...just make sure all the sticks are non toxic...and that it can't bite off big pieces that might cause impaction.

Thanks! He seemed kind of put out when I took the stick away from him, and didn't seem uncomfortable (like a mouth infection or whatever). I appreciate your input!
