When I first brought my cham home he seemed really tired fro the first 3-4 days.
His eyes were closed, he slept a lot, he didn't eat, didn't drink. I was really worried.
I think I had new "parent" anxiety as much or more than the cham was experiencing new environment anxiety.
Chances...
IN my limited experience I suspect it has a lot to do with the size of their cage and activity level.
The more they move around, burning calories, the less selective they would be. They need more fuel for the engine.
Smaller cages, less area to roam, less active = more selective eating...
I'm pretty sure, after one month of cohabitation, that Mel recognizes me; if not as a friend, then at least as the big animal that brings him crickets and water.
He's not afraid of me, i.e. he doesn't get defensive or try to move away when I reach into his cage.
When I go near his cage he...
Thanks
We have had him for 1 month now.
We bought him from an unknown vendor at a local swap meet called "First Monday" because it happens on the weekend, of the first Monday, of each month.
The guy we bought him from last month, had two Melleri together in a cage. We picked Mel to...
OK I removed all of the old veggies, dead soldiers etc. and wiped out the bin with a damp towel.
When you buy criks, how many die before you use them?
I lost at least half of the 500 I bought, probably more like 75%.
I bought 500 feeder crickets online and set them up in a plastic storage bin with a few cut up potato and carrot pieces.
Now after about a week the bin really stinks of moldy vegetables, dead crickets and there is a fairly strong ammonia smell.
I am concerned about using these crickets if...
Taking a cham is like taking a girlfriend.
You fall for one, mines a Melleri, make it through a couple of days, then do what ever it takes to keep em, if you want too.
The dark coloration in your second picture definitely indicates stress.
My melleri will go dark temporarily but if it last more than a few minutes I would try to calm him down.
Following the cricket line; why were there dead crickets in his cage?
Did you buy feeder crickets or catch...
I agree with Joe.
Not knowing your unique situation, it seems to me to be an opportunity for your family to come together in support and cooperation.
Surely there is more to your parents response than simple apathy. Maybe they fear handling the cham or maybe they don't feel it is their...
I would definitely contact the sellers. If you can't get a refund, at least learn as much as you can about your cham before you bought him i.e. feeding schedule, habitat etc.
Where did the cham come from? Was he moving and acting "normally" when you received him? Alert? Actively looking...
I think the material the cup is made out of is at least as important as the height.
I use white ceramic ramekins like the type you get sauce in at a restaurant. They are about 3" in diameter and maybe 1.5" tall.
Because the cups are slick even 3/4" crickets don't jump out.
Two other benefits...
