Another tragic pet shop story...

not buying things from them isnt going to change if they order more or not...

im going to say something, plus when you live in BFE, you cant exactly be picky on where you can buy worms...

What does seem to help is to state firmly IN PUBLIC and in front of other customers (pick a busy time) that you will no longer patronize this store because of their careless, thoughtless animal treatment, and that their chams are not healthy. It will embarrass them in front of clients. Also bring them an "impartial" care sheet such as from this forum, and tell them you will report their poor care to local inspectors (find out which agency does this in your city...it varies) and will send them a copy of your complaint.

BTW, I like your avatar pic...is that a jax on your shoulder? I like your expression/reaction to your little hanger-on.

:(...Thats life.....

not to be a downer, but it happens....however in a bright side....if there is cruelty in the world...there shall also be compassion and love,,,becasue we cant experience one without the other...in life everything balances out:)

just as there are careless petowners...\\

i believe there is a equal amount of caring ones...

pffffffft. Listen to your self, the thing is people need to give a shiz about the sensitive animals like chameleons.

Even if another fish is nipping on another in a fish tank you should say something and sort it out. unless it was given to it as food.

Maybe good to...

Could print out proper care and conditions and take it in and ask management to consider changing current practices... sometimes you get farther if you can show good reason why something "should not be".... this way atleast they may consider it and if they make changes you have done a small part to better the care and properly educate those who just are not aware.

For stores like Petsmart and Petco, they have corporate-forced care sheets. While they can not change the care sheets they set out, if you have willing employees they can change the set up for the chameleon. Unfortunately if the manager didn't follow this they could get into trouble. :(

I will not purchase live animals from petsmart or petco. That said there are times I have to use them for vines, crix, and other supplies. I feel that as long as I dont contribute to the cruel conditions they keep the animals in their care, thats all i can do. If more & more people quit buying their animal stock it would be less profitable and they will hopefully order and kill less animals. Profit vs loss is where its at in the corporate world.

My stand on this: don't support them with your business. You're only adding to the problem if you keep buying from them. Don't support the killing of innocent animals. They are not disposable!

X2... this is one of the simplest, and probably most effective, ways to deal with this problem. you'd be hard pressed to make any kind of meaningful difference when dealing with a "big box" store such at pestco/petsmart by trying to enlighten them on proper care of these animals. Big box corps rarely care about anything besides profit, and when it's an animal store, the animals are just a product. When you "save" one you are doing more harm than good as it just gets replaced by a new animal in a few days. buy some dubia on the forums and stop supporting these places.

It's easy for you to say that when you don't have to deal with temperatures that reach over 115F in the summer. By the by, getting a colony of dubia going isn't cheap, and it takes time.

Petsmart and Petco bashing keeps coming up, and it is against site rules. If you don't like it, why not start some sort of group that tries to advocate the correct set ups, etc.? Complaining on an internet forum with a small audience (it is small when you think about it) doesn't get much done. I would be more than willing to join the group, but in the mean time I have pets to take care of.

Ive got a dubia colony and I keep horns and silks. But you still need supplies on occasion and sometimes its just flat out cheaper to buy from them than to have to pay shipping costs.

what does 115f have to do with anything? I don't follow...Also I feel buying crickets at 10 cents a piece isn't cheap either in the long run.

There hasn't been a single thing I needed to get from petsmart that I couldn't get from a forum sponsor....you know supporting the people who make this board possible and not "the man" who works to put people like them out of business every day. IMO if you care about animals, you wouldnt support a company that blatantly mistreats them. That's just my opinion. take it or leave it.

I dont doubt it, but please show me where it says "no petsmart bashing" in the site rules.

Is there anything in the rules about people acting like moderators that aren't?

The point of my original post was this: if you have a problem with how they treat their animals, don't support them.

Well I don't know of many things that will survive being shipped in that heat, even with a cold pack. Every time I've had something shipped here half of it dies, if not more. As a matter of fact, most distributors of feeders WILL NOT ship to me if it is that hot, and most of the time not even over 90F (maybe it was 100F?). Plus, I do not get a refund on any insects that do not arrive alive in the heat! I end up having to buy twice as many as I need or paying for overnight shipping (and even then not all insects make it)... So is it cheaper? No.

Have you ever lived somewhere hot like AZ? From your posts I am guessing "no".

Conflicts between individuals and/or businesses should NOT be debated in the public forums. Chameleon Forums should not be used as a tool for resolving personal or commercial disputes.
If you were to replace the word Petsmart with any of the site sponsors, you'd get my point.

As far as acting like moderators, that's a big stretch.

EDIT: It's obvious we all have "opinions" here, but sometimes there is not a choice.
From what some of you are saying it makes it seem like we are doing something wrong by taking care of our pets however we have to. But hey, we will leave the "opinions" at that.

I would not get your point, because Petsmart does not support these forums. There is no comparison. apples and oranges.

You seem to carry an attitude like you run this place...who made you the rule enforcer? just sayin...

anyway, I don't want this to spiral into bashing, so let's leave it at that. I made my point to the OP.

So my local Petsmart has had two vields for a while now, and I look to see if anyone has brought one home when I get crickets. Today as I was walking by, I saw the slightly larger one biting and lunging at the other one who was shedding. I told a worker there what he was doing and if they aren't separated at least the second one will die. It seems like she didn't care and probably ignored it. I wish I was made of money, I would have taken one home...

that is the story of my male almost exactly so I did bring him home.

You are not getting my point because that is not my point. If I took any of the statements you are making and replaced Petsmart with something like LLLReptile it is against the rules and this thread would have been removed already...

Like I said we have "opinions", I will leave it at that... but do NOT tell me I am purposely supporting/condoning what Petsmart and Petco does just because I have to buy feeders from them to keep my reptiles happy and healthy.

Syn dear, you are supporting petsmart whether you want to believe it or not if you buy from them. I don't think you are a bad person for doing that though and you made it clear you are in a tough situation. i was never bashing on you. Oh and if you really wanted dubia, I don't think getting them into AZ with many deaths would be that hard if you plan appropriately pick a good time weather wise to ship. Average high for Apache Junction in october looks to be 87 degrees.

let's just hug this one out and agree to disagree : )

Fail! By buying from them you are supporting them. End of story. If no one bought anything from them, would they be in business? If they recieve no support (money in this case) they simply wouldnt be a business anymore. You are part of the problem and you don't seem to care to even attempt to be part of the solution.

I'll get back with some links later.

It's disgusting isn't it. I love capitalism, it's the best system out there, but I believe we are witness first hand what happens when corporations gain too much power. it's not good.

edit: yes, this is outside of the scope of pet stores. my appologies.
