Be's free range

Here's a really bad photo of my blue bar's free range. I took this photo quickly when the lights were already off. I will take some more tomorrow in the morning when the chams are up and moving about. It has hanging potted plants of dracinea and potshots with artificial vines and flowers. The garden arbor was built from scratch and stained by hand. The shower curtain drain table technique is also used to collect and drain the water from the mist king.

You do have to be careful. I let mine free range and today my 5 year old son had a friend over and they left the back door open, my son came upstairs to get me to tell me that my chameleon was headed for the door, he was literally making a b-line towards the open door and was like 3 ft away when I grabbed him!

free range and escape proof are, almost by definition, not possible at the same time :p

if you plan to free range you need to monitor your cham, especially at first. just like in their enclosure, they will have thier own "spots" around the house for the times when they leave the free-range...monitor them enough to know wehre they are and its not too hard to find them.

In my experiences though, they *generally* do not leave the free-range/area unless it is LACKING something (heat, food, space/size, foliage, etc)

Escape proof? Surely not. My chameleons have their own room. The door is closed most of the day to keep in the humidity and heat. Out of my four panthers only one (Rocko) will climb down from his free range from time to time to go explore and/or find me. I think he gets bored sitting around in there. The other's wouldn't dare to climb down from their areas as they are not as brave as he. I have been in the kitchen or living room numerous times talking to friends when we've spotted Rocko coming out from his room to come join us. It's really funny to see my friend's faces when in mid conversation they stop and point at this beautiful orange chameleon slowly making his way over to us.

Lol, that sounds awesome.

mine used to wander a lil bit..you just make the room they are in as safe as possible (my room is very organized, and has minimal furniture)..but as long as they get what they need, and plenty of vines to explore, there usually is no need for escape, only to explore a path and go back to the free range (when mine do go "exploreing" they take the same path and back everytime..

i know exactly what you mean, i will be talking with my back turned, sure enough a chameleon climbs up my back to perch on my shoulder to see whats goin on..lol

Very nice!! I enjoy seeing these pictures and stories of advice and listening to FR ideas so I can learn what to do myself.

I agree with SDHeli on the "path" as well. Although my guy had a few different paths that he would take, they were still pretty limited and after a while you learn them all so it becomes pretty quick to spot them.

Mine is, I have had him in it for 4 months now and he is trapped within the free range. It just takes some planing. I will get some pics later when I'm home.

Do you possibly make plans when you built the frame? Its gorgeous! I need something just like this! :)

It may be a bad picture(not), but it looks great!! Love it!! I might steal your idea!!:p

Lol please do but give me credit if you post photos! I got the idea from looking at garden arbors at the home improvement stores and thought 'the chams would love that, and I could mount lights on the top of it.' BING! That was it and I was off to work.

I first stained all my wood with a dark brown and the wood stained beautifully to my surprise. My first free range I painted with latex paint but from now on I'm staining them. I then cut the wood to size and screwed it all together. It's 7.5 ft tall x 5ft wide and 2 ft deep. There were a lot of cuts to make all the different parts but I enjoyed doing it.
