Well, I'm going to start of by saying that I'm a good person, and thats what primarily fueled this purchase. Here we go: I went to my local pet shop to pick up my veiled chameleon. He had just finished selling his last one a day before, and told me more he would have a few more (that he apparently raised himself) for sale in a few days. I put down a deposit and was going to leave. This is when the young man stopped me and and said that, if I wanted, he had just received a shipment of chameleons, and that they are only a tad more delicate than veileds. This struck me as odd and I agreed to take a look as to what he had. He then proceeded to open up a poorly packaged box and within that box another dozen or so cardboard boxes were littered carelessly. He opened one of them and pulled out a juvenile Mellers Chameleon. I was stunned.
He careless grabbed it and gripped it by the back and the animal was writing in terror. He had about a dozen or so more and was planning on selling them in store. This is when I took the time to ask him how would he keep them. This then led to a discussion on how they all were going to be kept in the same 2x2x4 for a few weeks and if not sold then put on the classifieds.
This outraged me and I was struck by a strong pity for the poor animals.
I left that store with a Mellers Chamleleon in hopes of making his life a little bit better.
Now, this was probably not the best desicion on my part, being an amatuer cham keeper, but it is a challenge I am very willing to take. Currently His cage is only a 2x2x4 but Within the next week I will have a full 2deepx6widex4tall for him. His humidity levels are peking at 80% and with lows in the 40s alternating (as suggested at melleri discovery) and his basking temp is close to 85 degrees with ambient in the 70s. Hes a tad dehydrated and underweight, this possibly from the shipping process and I plan on taking him to the vet this week as well for checkup and for medicine for parasites he may be carying.
Attached is the picture of my rescue. Hopefully I dont get burned to hard by you guys for this.
Oh and yes I know hes a bit stressed in the picture, as he doesn't seem to like me very much
