Blue Crown Conure :)

My hubby recently bought me a Blue Crown Conure (Parrot species). He's three months old and is named Cody. We had to wait a month while he was being weaned by the breeder. I never thought I could have a bird because of our cats. I learned earlier this year that the larger parrot species could live in homes with cats. They are big enough to look threatening and have a beak and voice that wards off predators. Our cats were interested in him for a few days but have seemed to figure out that he's part of the house now. They also do not like the loud shreiks that Cody is capable of producing if they get close to his cage. He's a smart boy. After a week he has already learned to obey the "up command" onto my hand with little hesitation. He adores having his head and neck scratched and petted like a dog. His wings are trimmed so he can't fly buy can gently glide from hand to perch, etc. His species are supposed to be fairly good talkers. They usually start when they are about a year old. Anybody else got a parrot?

Before I got all these small reptiles I wanted to get a conure. They are so intelligent!

Congratulations!

Congratulations! It sounds like he is very clever. I have 4: a bare eyed cockatoo, a white capped pionus, and two cockateils. I love the intelligence of parrots.

They are smart!

I bought five different books on parrots before I got Cody. I enjoy reading about the different species. They are all so beautiful and interesting. They are smart. When I say "Hi Cody" he will often respond with that simultaneous wing and backward leg stretch move in acknowledgement. He knew his name after one day. Can you tell I'm in love :p

Cool Catherine. I have a ring necked parakeet and he is a crack up. He flies free in the house and dive bombs the dogs. He talks too. The photo I have of him is too big to upload here. :(

AJA, tinypic.com has an image-resizer, and it makes it easy to use tags.

Enjoy your Conure! I just realized you are in Washington - my friend in the Puget Sound area knows a breeder. I would laugh if it's the same person.

Your like Ace Ventura do you sit naked in the middle of the room and say come my jungle friends then all the lizards and birds and god knows what else your keeping over there all come out of the woodwork to greet you! LOL :D:D:D

By the way whats in the cage in the back ground looks like two large iguana type lizards? Also that view is unreal wow!!!!

Had a Galah back home....it flew in and was obviously a pet. Placed ads etc in all the newspapers but he was never claimed. I think he was let go by a frustrated/irresponsible owner. :( He could really talk, in fact you couldn't shut him up. He had a thick English accent, swore like nothing on earth.....bloody this, bloody that and knew and asked for quite a few drinks including rum and coke and a dirty martini (no....we didnt teach him - he flew in with a dirty, foul beak!).

He was eventually banned from being let out in the house as he was partial to beer and thought nothing of going through the recycling to see if he could score any left overs from empty beer cans and would attempt to take your arm off if you tried to get him out of the recycling bin until he had finished. His other fave trick was to crawl under the lounge and ambush toes...he had a very big dislike for toes and even knew they were there even if you had socks on.

He had his wing clipped so that he could graze in the backyard which was his favorite...he would mutter and laugh under his breath as he ripped up the lawn and really enjoyed it.

We were very lucky to have understanding neighbors who had to put up with "give me a quick f*!"&^% beer!" usually at 5am on a Sunday morning at the top of his lungs followed by a very evil laugh. Unfortunately he was old and was only with us for a few years but he was a character and got crankier and crankier in his old age.

If i had a million dollars i would have given it to you for that bird!!!!

Omg :)

OMG Panthercham! What a great story! I wish you could have found out his life history. Maybe he lived at a college frat house. His previous owner must have been a real piece of work in any case. I'm hoping Cody doesn't pick up anything embarrassing. His cage is positioned so he can see the TV. I do have a cage in the background of the one picture with two six year old iguanas in it. They have the real view. They like to be petted too. I do have a zoo in my house :p

Cool!!! I have an Indian ring neck bird. He is all blue with a red beak and a black ring on his throat. I have a pic in a thread somewhere:) anyways congrats!!

I have always wanted one but there pretty expensive.
And you have to be social with them a lot.

Fun being social :)

Being social with them is the fun of it. They love being petted, being handled and spending real time with their keepers. As much as I LOVE chameleons you can't get that experience from them.

... and she hasn't eaten your drapes? Amazing!

Great birds indeed :)

You have had some really great birds! Cody is just starting to chew on things. I know he's really going to get into chewing as he ages. Amazons are supposed to be real good talkers. Did yours laugh before talking? What words does she say?

Wonderful! I do a ton of work with our local parrot rescue. We currently have 2 blue crown in the house. I have to say they are by far the best talkers in the house out of all the birds. They are adorable little clowns. Glad to hear about your new addition, and I can't wait to hear more about him. :)

that is one pretty bird!!!!!! i've been eyeing out soooo many different species of birds! a lot of them are as much as a few Faly!!

Flight Suits?

Have any of you parrot owners used the Flight Suit product? I want to have Cody out of the cage a lot but don't want him pooping everywhere. I bought a couple of those Flight Suits with the disposable cotton pads (Diapers for birds). I tried it out on Cody last night. I was able to have him in my lap watching TV for about 1/2 hour. I petted him until he was almost asleep. He picks at the straps a bit but they are supposed to get used to wearing the thing. I even had two cats on the couch with us. One could have cared less about Cody and the other just sat and stared at him.

Anyway....I took the Flight Suit off and there were two poops neatly placed down in the pouch and Cody's bottom was perfectly clean. Whoever invented the product must be a millionaire by now ;)
