Check out these monsters!

So while visiting Janet, I knew I was in prime area for Megaphasma denticrus. I went out on a midnight scavenger hunt with Janet and came back with five females and one male. They are absolutely huge. I have bought them their own reptibreeze enclosure. Today I was replacing their branches and decided to see if I had any eggs yet. I got up to 200 and stopped counting because I was no where close to the end. That was only about 1/4 of the floor of their cage.

They are monsters. They strip down oak like it's chocolate. They apparently have very short lifespans which is why they lay eggs in such mass volume. I figure I will give them another week to do their thing, then I will feed off the adults.

I gave one to Naga today. He went bananas for it. So I guess it will be a good food item for my big guys.

Sorry for the crappy pics, but they don't stay in one place very well!

GROSS!
I can handle the roaches, not sure I could let that thing anywhere near me or I would scream like a little girl! Yikes!

That's thing is huge!

They are monsters. I am putting in a two foot section of branch with probably well over 40 large oak leaves on it. In three days it is stripped bare....and that is with only five of them, lol. They are going to be great for larger species of chameleons!

Stick insects are cleaner than any other insect out there IMO. They spend their lives in the shrubs and trees.....not milling around through soil for scraps like roaches.

Fantastic sticks Joel- I want - i need ! Inspired by Naga's reaction to them I have just bought 60 indians, o.k- no laughing- I know they are teeny compared to the Megaphasma but it's a start! Love insects, love my roaches and sticks - just can't do spiders!

I can do spiders as long as they are on the other side of a brick wall, down the street from wherever I am sitting!!

Glad you ordered some...they will love them!

Don't show that skinny little one, show the big females. Or did you feed them out already....

None of them are near as "fat" as they were that night. They have had hundreds of eggs since being here. The largest got fed to Naga on a trial run that went extremely successful!

Nice! Our most common sticks here in Florida have a chemical spray that they aim at eyes, so I don't think I'm going to try feeding those, lol.

Two-striped walking sticks are nasty. They can do some serious damage if you aren't paying attention. Their defense system is ingenious but makes them horrible for feeder insects.

They do look pretty neat though! The males pretty much spend their adult days hitching a ride on the females' back.

Not my photo, but here's Anisomorpha buprestoides:

Those are cool looking. Yeah, male stick bugs here don't really have much of a life. They just breed and die based on what I've been reading about them. Of course the lifespan for this species is short anyways.

Does the spray cause a burning sensation?
