Cost of Fecals

We have enquired about a fecal for our cham, and the price seemed huge - £90! How much does a bacterial and parasitic fecal cost in the US? (Just curious, not planning to send chameleon poop in the post to the US!). :)

Is that including the vet visit?

Fecal here is like $20 but the vet visit can be $40-$60

I just spent $44.00 and $47.00 just to drop off the sample for review! I was told that the first vet wasn't that good (and his came back positive with only a float) so I took another one 1 day later to another vet who did a smear and a float...it came back negative.

I am now awaiting the arrival of my microscope. I have reviewed fecal floats and smears when I worked for a vet and most of the parasites are similar to that of dogs, cats and horses. But I can hook up the camera and take pictures to send to the doctor if I have a question! Woo Hoo!

Nope, that is just for the fecal. The vet visits cost £25 plus whatever treatment they have (they do have good experience with exotics which is why we go to them). I think they are on the expensive side though (just spent £150 on the rat today). They said the expensive bit is preparing the fecal for the viewing.........

Free for me! :) Todd just got a microscope! Time to use all of that Microbiology my parents paid for! :)

My Vet also only charges $22 for drop off fecals.

Ditto... Getting a microscope and learning how to do it is the trick. I think I paid $18 for drop off fecals before I had my 'scope, but spend a few hundred bucks if you know you're going to eventually need it, and buy all the crap it takes to do them yourself. You might have to just call around and get prices, since many vets are dog/cat specialists (but you don't really have to be a reptile specialist to successfully do fecal check).

My vet will do written health certificates for my tortoises now for $3 per head. I drop them off, and pick them up a few hours later. I love it.

I don't pay for a vet visit, I just take a sample and my vet does the fecal float for $12. He also is really good on medicine cost. i got baytril for only $15. All I need to do is call him for a refill. The exoic vet in Boseman told the vet here it would be good if he would do my fecals and prescribe medication when I know what I want because after talking to me he is confident I know what I am doing. Boy do I hope that reptile vet is correct. But he knows I can't be driving five hours each way for regular problems.

Our vets don't do the testing themselves, they send it all off to an external lab. When we looked at getting Draig's necropsy, if it went to the external lab we were looking at about £200 (included biochem tests etc).
