Cup Feeding

How did you guys train your chams to cup feed? I assume this can't happen until they are bigger, mine is 3 months old is he too small to cup feed? Any information would be helpful, thanks!

just get some plastic cups from the local deli they put potato salad in and throw some crickets in there... they usually can't get out and your cham will notice them and pick them off. I'm assuming this is what your talking about when you say cup feeding??

I started cup feeding mine a couple of days after I got him at 4 months, but at three months I'd give it a shot. I use the smaller solo type cups, colored not clear, and wedged the cup at the bottom in the trunks of the ficus. His basking spot is in the top of said ficus so he saw the crix in the cup and caught on pretty quick. I still make him shoot at one or two crix a day and his daily super.

nah

He should be fine. I use those same cups as a feeding cup the other peeps are talking about. It works fine. My cham has been eating from them since he was 2 months old. If you cup feed, you will find him waiting by his dish before feeding times. Kinda like a dog. its funny
good luck

Any downsides to cup feeding?

The cup isn't very pretty and your cham gets less exercise. Let him hunt a bit- I always release a free bug or two and let my chams hunt before putting the cup of food in.

Be sure to cut the bottom out and hot glue some screen on there to avoid collecting water.

hey! i never thought about putting screen in the bottom to help get rid of water...

Yeah, just make sure you feel the edges and put a bead of hot glue over them if they are at all sharp. You don't want your cham catching his tongue on anything pointy :X

I just use screen and the cups. NO BAD CHEMICALS.

If I have 2 cups same size, I cut a hole in the bottom of one cup. Then cut screen a bit larger then the bottom of the cup's circumference. I place the screen on the bottom of the 1 bottom cut cup and wedge it into the other cup.

Thus creating a nice tight seal for the screen.

Get it?

That's a great idea! I like the hot glue though to take the edge off of the cut plastic. The screen isn't a problem your way, but I am paranoid about cham tongues being around anything they could catch on.

I cup feed from up in the cage. Brody's cup is twist tied to the side of the cage near the top.

We also release a few crix every day for her to chase. As for water collecting in the cup, I used a hot BBQ poker thing and melted a few holes in the bottom of the cup so the water could drain. If you do this make sure you check for sharp edges around where you made the holes.

I started cup feeding mine at about 3 months, he loved it. He would tag one right after another. Now the story has changed, he hates the cup now. He would rather go a day without food than eat from the cup. So i had no choice but to let the crickets free. He loves the hunt...

Mine doesn't get it. I left the cup in there yesterday and he didn't even eat one, so I had no choice but to let them free. Any advice on how to teach him?

Does he hand feed at all? If he does, you could try putting the cup behind your hand while offering him a very high priority feeder (waxworm, silkie, hornworm etc) and get him interested. Hold the feeder in the mouth of the cup (without dropping it in, though) before he shoots and then let him shoot it out of your fingers. Keep trying this with other food and then start showing him and then drop the feeder into the cup. Make sure the cup is in plain sight and kind of close (under a perching branch works well). It helps if you use feeders he really likes or fast moving bugs- preferably both. He should get the idea after a while.

I don't really like cup feeding it doesn't seem natural.
Chams enjoy hunting ;)

Then you've never been on vacation or fed roaches before ;)

With a misting system, and a cup trained chameleon, they're the easiest pet on the planet. When I'm gone for a few days I put 10-12 roaches in the cup with cricket chow and some collard leaves..fill up the misting resevoir and I'm gone.

Plus roaches can't be free roamed, and roaches are the dream feeder.

It's good to be Royden! :D
