Does anyone else get made fun of?

Wow...I never thought I'd get this much response. Can't wait to read all of the answers. I wish I had time right now, but I have to work on my research paper. Thanks for all of your input! I'll be getting back with some responses soon!

Oh my gosh my whole family thinks I'm going to be the crazy reptile hoarder when I'm older because in the past I had 8 turtles all at the same time for 5 years straight plus tree frogs and snakes till we moved and got rid of them all. Then they thought I was done with reptiles but honestly I've just begun with chameleons ;)

Lesson #1 from sh*t talking school is to attack the thing that the person you are ridiculing loves and cares about most (the "yo mama principal"). Add to that this hobby that we place at the center of our lives is pretty random to the large majority of people. I don't know about you guys, but I struggle to concisely describe why I love chameleons so much, even to fully understand it myself.

Our passion for these googly eyed creatures is pretty ripe for teasing and ridicule, and I am just fine with it.. a cheap price to pay for the joy I get from seeing my boys thrive. I just make sure I am armed with a few wicked comebacks

this made me lol.. that's too funny.. hopefully she'll be able to save you some money in your future ;)

trust me i hope so to...her cat makes everyone made it actully hasn't been around in about a week and ive been getting some funny looks from her.......wasn't me cause im still buying rats: rolleyes:.... she treats that dog like a kid its funn:D

Hahahaha i hope it never comes back or i migt stay true to my word

My husband doesn't care for my chams like I do but he also knows how having an interest in chameleons literally saved my life after I was involved in a couple car accidents within a 2 month period and had a miscarriage as a result. I was put on heavy painkillers to deal with pain, started drinking and had no interest in getting out of bed during the day. Along came my first veiled chameleon, Karma! How can one spend all day in bed drunk and stoned when one has someone that is relying on you for survival? I really do owe my life to my chameleon's and hubby knows that. Thats why he'll make me custom cages, take detours on the way home from work so he can buy me fresh feeders and he has the patience to listen when I'm facing a chameleon conundrum and most of all, he doesn't bitch when I buy new supplies, which lately seems to be all the time! He's happy that I'm happy - thats all he cares about. My kids on the other hand....they think I'm craaaaazy like a fox! :D

That's a wonderful story. Wish my wife understood how healthy my cham hobby is for me, when I could be out doing "other" things

I have only had my cham for a lil time now and everyone I talk to about him loves the idea of having such a cool pet. MY wife on the outer hand is supper jealous of the time I spend on the husbandry for him.. when I talk about him or things i need to get for him she will not ever respond to what i'l saying.. LOL but she know I love her more thats why she pust up with it. LOL

I think we are in the same boat. I think that's the only reason my wife puts up with it in the end

Not only do my employees/family make fun of me, it really frustrates me that I have no one to talk to in person about the enjoyment I get from having a chameleon. I would love to have a friend that shared my crazy interests in exotics, so I am very grateful for this forum.

Amen to that. That's all I want is for my wife to be in the least bit interested in him. She liked him at first when we took him out all the time, but since he hit that terrible teen stage, he hasn't let us take him out, so she has no interest in him anymore. I can't even mention him without getting the look

I've always been a pretty quiet and solitary person. It's hard for me to break out of my shell. I spent most of my life having very few friends due to my shyness (those few friends that I had are still true friends of mine, so I take it as a blessing). When I was a child, my pets were my only friends. I was more comfortable around animals than humans. They don't judge. :) It's not crazy to love animals. Our society has just lost touch with nature. People suffer from "nature deficit disorder". We aren't the weirdos, they are. ;)

haha i like the way you put that. I had TONS of friends growing up, and was not the least bit shy, but ask me how many of them call me on a YEARLY basis now....maybe one. I don't really have time for friends right now anyway but you'd think some of them would have a least come to see my newborn son at the hospital. Got no visitors other than family and my wife's friends. Feels kinda crappy, but I get to live with my very best friend in the world and she means everything to me. Even though she doesn't understand my reptile obsession.

well said...

My friend of 20 odd years comes over regularly - he is constantly mocking me for 'mothering' my monitor lizard :D.
My brother also takes the piss on occasion, but he lives in Japan so he doesn't see as much.......... I think they understand that they take quite a bit of care, it's mostly just something to laugh at ........good job they don't know how much I think about them.......I advise mentioning it less to your wife if you can, unless you like it when she teases you :D

I try not to mention anything about him anymore, but when I tell her I need to fix his misting set up, work on his new cage, or look for different feeders I could breed, she freaks out and says I need to spend time with her and my son. I can have time for both!!!! I just wish there was a way she would just let me do my own thing without having to get crap about it

Sometimes they throw a silly comment about it but I just ignore it and think, as mentioned, they're just jealous cause they don't have this awesome, very pretty and rare pet as I do. If the speaker in person got a dog or something I just makes another snessy comment about that and since they don't got any experience of owning a chameleon they don't know what it's like. I got the same feelings for Sheldon as a dog owner got for it's dog.

When I first got into chams Id get shit all the time, but now that most friends and family have seen my room, elaborate set ups, and time that goes into it I dont get it nearly as much.. Still on occasion I do, but I dont bother bringing my chams up around most people because its typically the same reaction... It would be nice to have someone to talk about chams and exotics in with, but at least I have CF! :D

this was the same with my family... my dad got upset with me that i ended up paying so much and said that i should have just let her die without having to take her to the vet... i was a bit appalled that he would say such a thing, especially because that was the day after we had to put her down.

whatever.. now that i moved back in to my parent's place, he sits there and watches Azul occasionally.. most of my family does actually except my younger sister-in-law. she says that she's going to hate him until he turns blue.. she's not completely serious cause she says that he's cooler looking than Amy :p

That's awful :( During Pascal's ordeal, I go ta lot of mixed signals, because my mom said "he's just a lizard bla bla bla" but then we got him home and she'd medicate him, hold him over by the window, make him a bug mash... Moms. I think once they realized how much I needed this "lizard" they embraced him as family.

My little sister is the same way. She looks at him and his food like "ewwww" but the minute he is out it's "oh can I hold him!?!?" Lol.

But always gets mad when i spend to much time playing with it ....little does she know its for her

The girl who lives next door told me that i should leave my pests (python named myla wouldnt hurt a fly) inside.. i told her keep her cat and little dog in side or i wont be paying for rats for awhile:D:D:D:rolleyes:

Aww you're giving her a cham!? :D

That is freaking hilarious! Messed up, but hilarious lol :D

I get it all the time from home, work, friends, but luckily I know she loved me back... hate it when ppl say "ïts just a lizard" lol... I know she has feelings and I love her!!!
I made a poop sheet for the vet to monitor her improvement and although it makes me look like I'm way more than obsessed, the vet asked if she could keep it to show and use with other patients!
Needless to say I was feeling quite chuffed! :D

Trust me, if you have one loyal person in your corner, consider yourself blessed. I'll take one great friend/spouse that will always be there for me through thick and thin over 50 mediocre, half a!$ acquaintances any day. It's quality...not quantity. :) Give me a couple of good friends, my family and a few critters and I'm content...well, almost. A big piece of land in the mountains and a mini farm would be nice, too. ;)

Yah but it shut her up real quick hahaha
