Dubias - I'm sold

About a month ago I hesitantly picked up a small assortment of dubias. I used up the rest of my crix ( truthfully they died off) and have not looked back. I have not had a single dub die off unless assisted by 'popcorn'. He eats 2-3 a day and couldn't be happier.

Needless to say I'm impressed, my computer/ reptile room doesn't smell like death & it's peacefully quite

I'm afraid they would escape. Don't think I can handle loose roaches in the hoose

You will be pleasantly surprised how LESS likely they are to escape than the crickets, not to mention better smelling. I don't know if I will ever be able to get totally away from crickets as a feeder, but the fewer the better.

Just follow the posts/guides. They have more of an interest of hiding vs "how do I get out of here". They do have a slight smell but I attribute it to the cricket water xtals I have, a slight citrus odor.

Best part is they don't smell like someone took a massive dump in the room.

Remember 95% of roaches are not pests. And 90% of penguins would die in cold weather.

Now i just got to stop mine from breeding, im at about 2k, and im only using 2-3 adults aday.

LOL "...doesn't smell like death..." I totally agree with using roaches over crickets, but not just for the smell (or lack of).

haha, this is EXACTLY what happened to me! started with the small assortment and the rest of the crix died off. Look on ebay for dubia if you haven't already, I got a group of 15 adult females and 5 males for 16$ shipped! After just one week, there are around 50-60 nymphs running around and the bin that's in my study/cham room doesn't even smell in the slightest:D! The adults are a little freaky, but the nymphs are awesome. I feel so dumb for not doing this sooner!

dubias

After buying crickets for over 40 years dubias have changed my life. I feed new born or small dubia to baby chameleons, tiny baby fire salamanders, my smallest slings, and my colorado toads love the big ones. I have all sizes in between. I live near a cricket farm but the dubia have replaced crickets entirely for me. Any thing that I need pinheads for I now feed bean beetles, or fruitflies. No more chirping under the fridge or smelly crickets. And even with an excess of over 60 pounds of roaches i have no problems with escapees surviving loose in the house or in my outbuildings.

I don't know if I could handle it. Been this close to buy some when I go to pick up some feeders. But it always ends up by picking crickets :( And my girlfriend would never let me, do you got any good argument I can use to convice her that they're not that scarry?

I have my dubias in two bins as a back up. So they're actually in a medium size bin and that bin is in a large bin. I'm pretty paranoid about them getting out. And I'm glad I did because when I was getting some out the other day, I shook the crate and one fell into the larger bin.

Try calling them pillbugs, or just dubias, just don't use the R word. If you are dependant on the crickets eventually the cost and the hassle of having to go get them should help. My wife got over it because of the cost, and it helps that she sees my neighbors come to get food for their chameleons and other critters.

haha my wife thinks they're dubia beetles.. She has yet to see the adults, and I don't think she will ever go looking through feeder bins either..

I told my family just to think of them as beetles, even though they knew they were not. They say as long as it stays in you room, they are fine with it.
Think I may want to try some roaches....what do you feed them?

You should try them. i feed mine a mix of veggies, fruits, and some grains.

What?!?! What's your female to male ratio and what temps are they at?

I think its maybe 2:1 my guys a baby so can't feed off adults. I have 1k nymphs when they get older ill feed off the males (when I can sex them).

Room temps, humidity is probably 20% no idea how to raise it without getting mold.
