My female chameleon is just lying in my hand flat on her belly, i can see 2 sort of eggs protruding slightly from her back, she cant put any weight on her legs and they all look limp. her back legs look slightly swollen and have a very sharp point protruding out (on both legs same place) near her hips. she is droopy and falling off to sleep, but thats probably down to the time (sleep time)

she's about 7 months old

have been giving her all vitamins and minerals, and a lot of calcium. what could this be? i give water regularly aswell. could she be dehidrated??

I have a egg laying site but she has not started digging.

Can you post a pic? It really doesn't sound good you should get her to the vets today!!! Are the eggs fertile? and if so, when did you mate her?

her legs are limp but her feet still got a hell of a grip.

and the point in the leg is extremly sharpe and pointy.

Did you ever get a good phosphorous free calcium powder or did you continue to use the Sandfire dust only? Lighting? She looks full of eggs, have you given her privacy as well as the egg laying bucket? I am thinking a Vet is in order here...

I feed her gut loaded crickets which are gutloaded with

T-Rex Calcium Plus food for crickets

about 8-10 standard size crickets a day, then take out the ones that are uneaten, (average 4-5 eaten)

I then Use

Sticky tontue farms, Miner-all I 1 time every 2 days.

Then Calypso cricket dust (100% natural calcium)

Cage is a Glass viv
Lighting is Exo Terra Sun Glo Tight beam basking lamp
Temperature ranges from 28-31C (infra red temp test shows 32-35 on chams)
Night temps fall to 15-18C

Humidity is at 75%
Plants are all exoterra plants and are artificial,

No substrate in cage apart from some large wood logs and some sticks.

Cage is kept under a window, no direct sunlight hits the cage and it is well ventilated.

Cham

Yemen Veiled chameleon Female 8-9 months old
unmated

Watering I have a dripper system and sprey 2 times a day all over cage.

Poo looks normal, as it always dose, large brown with small white and clear watery stuff.

there is no history of any problems.

Got a booking in a vet in 1 hour so i'll be taking her in a bit.

Sorry to hear about your little girl.

Get her to the vet ASAP. He can give her an injection for calcium. She own't make it otherwise.

In the mean time, there is something going on with your husbandry. Either lighting or supplementation or temps. Ah, I see you answered the questions. That's great.

I dont see a UVB bulb in there...

but she gets a lot of direct sunlight when she isnt in the cage (about 5-6 hours a day). i'll have to get a UVB bulb then? i'll order one for tommorow.

Right. That must be it. No UVB.

She's getting the calcium, but can't absorb it. The vet can take care of that in the mean time, and some direct sunlight would really help, as long as she didn't get overheated.

With the muscle control loss associated with MBD I wonder if she will be able to lay those eggs. It's obvious she won't be able to dig any time soon. The vet may need to do something to help her express those eggs.

Definitely a trip to the vet. I don't see any way around that. I see you have an appointment for her today. That's excellent. Be sure to tell him about the lack of UVB lamp, and the concern that she has MBD.

when you say a lot of direct sun light, do you mean through a the window?

If do, the glass from the window will filter out the majority of the beneficial UVB.

Also I am not sure about the Glass Viv for you Cham. Hopefully one of the senior members will correct me if I am wrong...

hope that helps and good luck

By direct sunlight- do you mean outdoors or indoors through a window? What she needs from the sun she cannot get through a window. Window glass is engineered to inihibit the passage of the type of rays she needs.

Ah, Opihiman, you beat me to it.

Yes, the glass cage is a bad idea. But I think folks were responding more to the life and death MBD/egg laden issue. She does need a linear UVB light. Direct outdoors sunlight would help her greatly, as long as she's not overheated. And then a nice big screen cage for her and some live plants.

Here is a great web site that pretty much covers it all:

Simply ordering the bulb is more than likely not going to help at this stage. She needs to see a vet to get a calcium boosting shot in order for her to recover and being gravid is very taxing to them.

Please keep us updated on what the vet says.

The temperature range you posted is too low for an adult veiled, but the direct measurements are better. How is the chameleon getting hotter than the cage environment? She could be impacted or experiencing similar symptoms, which might help explain the symmetry in the back legs.

Yes Yes and Yes.
Opihiman got it right. eventhough the sun might be directly shining thru the window, the glass cage will still block all the uvb out. So Roguekiller, unfortunately, all that light is not doing anything good to her except for providing heat.

I agree with Julirs.
Vet is your #1 priority.
You got an emergency situation that can turn into critical in short time.
Being gravid does make it much worse..

So, go!
do you know a vet around your area that handles chameleon?
if not, check www.herpvetconnection.com

Good Luck!
