Handling Reptar

So I decided to handle Reptar today. He made his way up to my head which was pretty cute. I only handled him for about 1 minute. He's so cute and friendly and I'm so happy with him. Here's Reptar and I :D

Cool, don't ya love that feeling when they climb on you the very first time!? :D
You know he trusts you.
How did you get him on you?
I use my hand, make it flat, and slide my fingers gently under them and let
them feel the warmth for a few seconds before sliding my hand under them.

When they climb on you w/o any baiting, with food, that's such a great feeling :)

Yes I do! He is so sweet and very friendly. Sometimes when I open the cage, he just comes toward the opening and just chills there. So I thought, hey why not handle him to see what he does. I went to get him. I put 1 hand over him to kind of push him toward my other hand that was flat and he went with it.
Does he really trust me?? I can't tell but that is so cool if he does!! :)

fantastic, it feels so weird when they grab your ears:eek:

He didn't climb up my ears sadly. He just went up my arms to my shoulder and then I had to bend forward a little bit so he could explore my back and then from my back he climbed my head from the back part of it and made it to the top and roared "I'm the chameleon of the world!"

Very amusing pics :) He must 'trust' you to some extent, I like to think my lizards trust me but they really only ever approach me when there's food involved.......
For future reference lizards generally don't like being approached from above, it takes longer but the little kind of 'push' is not really going to help him trust you lol.
It's good that you are still enjoying him just as much, I hope you'll have plenty of room for more of them when you move back to LA :D

Thank you buddy! Yeah i think he is starting to gain trust with me which is pretty cool! Ahhh don't worry many more friends to join the forum soon!

I agree with David, I have gotten into trouble using both hands.
They are okay when they see your hand in front and coming from eye
level or reaching up to them, but never reach a hand behind them where they cant see or they are likely to turn and bite in fear.

I get you but Reptar actually just walks to my hand now which is pretty cool :)

Great pictures...Your expression is just as enthusiastic as I imagined it to be! :D You'll find Reptar will go for the head, it's warm and they are 'heat seekers', of course! Great that you've developed a trusting relationship since you've had him - I see a long and meaningful relationship between you two!! :)

Smeagie does that too, but when I have to take him home from the free range, he is getting sleepy and grumpy and doesnt want to go home ;)

That's about the only time he needs to be gently coaxed :D

Yeah, when I open his cage to let him out, then he practly jumps on me

Wow I totally missed that about them being heat seekers. I had no idea but that is so cool to know!! Thank you. I'm very glad he is gaining trust with me :)
I hope when I get my next chameleon in a few months that he'll be this cool and trustworthy.

Yes! Reptar has tried to jump out of the cage once. Well not literally but he hangs on two feet onto the brach that's right in front of the door and tries to find a way out haha
