Happy 1st Hatchday, Vladslav!

Hello again everyone!

While I've been busy dealing with some family things I haven't had the time to be on here much- mostly lurking here and there for the past two months or so. But I just had to share Vladislav's first birthday with everyone! We had a pretty bad scare with him back in early March- I wasn't sure he'd make it to his first birthday to be honest.

I'd taken in a fecal to my vet for a routine screen, and it came back with a moderate pinworm infection; likely something he picked up from some pet store feeders I bought when my silkworm colony crashed this winter. Unfortunately, he became extremely ill after his first treatment of Fenbendazole- within a few hours he turned black and was unable to perch, and lay twitching on the bottom of his cage. I rushed him back to the vet, where it was determined that what had been dispensed to me was not in fact Fenbendazole, but they were unable to identify what exactly the mystery medication was. Whatever it was, it was certainly nephrotoxic as his bloodwork showed significant kidney function issues. He was kept at the vets' for three days while receiving IV fluids to try and flush his system of whatever it was he'd been given, as well as other supportive therapies. Even after I was allowed to take him home I had a heck of a time getting him to eat, and anyone who's seen my previous Vladislav posts knows that eating has never been an issue with my green garbage can. He ended up losing quite a bit of weight, and my vet and I were very worried- she even came by my place a few times after work to check on him (my vet is amazing). They didn't charge me a single cent for the whole ordeal. Thankfully Vladislav is his old self again, begging for crickets, gulping his hornworms, and exploring the apartment like he used to. He is still a bit thin, and wobbly on one of his back legs (I'm not sure that will ever improve) but he has come leaps and bounds already. My little trooper!

Happy Hatchday, Vladislav. I'm glad you're still with me!

Happy Hatchday Vladisav!!

I hate to hear that he went through such an ordeal, but I am glad that the outcome is good news! He looks great for being a chameleon that's been through so much. Well done with him MissLissa.

He is such a handsome little man. I'm glad to hear your vet was able to turn things around for him.
Happy first hatch day Valdslav!

Wow! What a terrible error on their part. :-/

Happy Birthday!!

I worked in exotic vet clinics for a decade before my current job. Medical mistakes are rare, but they do occur, and I can tell you that everyone feels truly, honestly awful when it does. In one of the two clinics I worked at, a new vet student made a mistake which unfortunately resulted in the death of the pet, and the student ended up having a breakdown and leaving the entire field because of the guilt. Mistakes are tragic things that just kind of happen, because medical professionals are humans, too. I'm sure you, me, and everyone else in the world has made workplace mistakes before- unfortunately, when that happens in a medical field, people and pets can get sick or die. Was I happy about it? No, absolutely not. But this clinic is one that I used to work for, this vet is one I know and trust, and the vet tech who dispensed the medication is someone whom I consider a friend as well as being a knowledgeable reptile keeper herself, and I know that no ill intent was meant towards Vladislav. It was an honest mistake, and we all cried together when we realized what had happened. I also should have known that the medication I was giving my lizard was not correct- it was not the right colour or consistency for Fenbendazole, and I've dispensed that medication thousands of times. Basically Vladislav was failed on every level, but the clinic and vet and tech and I did everything we humanly could to rectify the situation, and thankfully in this instance that was possible. I try very hard not to blame people for human mistakes... sometimes I am more successful than others, but I try.
