Help ID fecal float photos

I have used this for years in my koi pond as a spring rid all and then I start my filters back up it works awesome for my pond. I never thought of using it as a cleaner for cham cages. I know you would want to dilute it... Hum now you got me thinking..lol

Thanks Dez and Suzi!!!

BTW I have a huge question and nothing turned up on searching.

Has anyone used Virkon S Everything I read about it is that it is wonderful. People say it has a faster kill time than 12% H2O2 and people are using it in koi ponds to kill viruses and parasites without killing the fish as well as using it in birds drinking water to deworm and deparasitize if that's a word.

I would like to know any and all info people have about this sanitizer??

Awesome....Yes 1% is the typical cleaning solution and they sell them in tablet form for this strength. Here are a couple of links and showing it kill parasitic infections in humans at .25%. It is interesting to note that in this paper it shows the same mode of action as high strength peroxide.

Ok...I still want to hear what anyone has to say about this Virkon S, but I went ahead and ordered the stuff. It comes out to about $1 a gallon if gotten in the 25 tab bottles (cheaper in the buckets) And seems to be as effective or more so than anything I have found. (40vol peroxide, F10, Roccal D) It is a peroxide action and is safe for fish, birds and humans to ingest so I would call that pretty safe. It has the shortest contact time of them all except peroxide. It even seems like it would be able to be used in the potted plants during treatment. (cleaning the dirt during treatment) It also seems like if any is inadvertently left on a drinking surface it would only aid in deparasiting the cham:confused: The only place close for me to buy peroxide only has liter sizes of 30 vol and it's $8 a liter. At that price I don't feel like I can use it in excess like I would like. Food grade 35% peroxide is $50 a gallon which could be cut to make three gal but still.

Thoughts?

Howdy Rob,

As often is the case, with a novice like me :)o) unless the "parasite" in question is highly definable; unlike your samples :)(), I end-up scratching my head trying to decide if it is actually a parasite oocyst or just a pseudoparasite. Plant material (cells etc.), including pollen, can sometimes look similar roundworm eggs, coccidia, and a few others. That being said, when you have the "real thing" it can really jump out at you with no doubt. Like Dez's coccidia and pinworm examples, there is no doubt what we're looking at :).

Here's a couple of my shots:

Here's one of my videos of a wild panther's blood sample showing microfilarial worms:

Thanks Dave!! Your example of "probable plant matter" looks a lot more like my photos than your coccidia photos. I wouldn't call you a novice ;) Thanks for the photos and the weigh in. Do you have any thoughts on the Virkon S?

Howdy Rob,

Years ago, I looked into Virkon S but I don't remember why I didn't go that direction . Sounds like good stuff. I still have some of the gallon of Nolvasan that I used in non-parasite sanitizing situations. Funny, I just sold-off the last half a dozen of my quart bottles of 40 volume H2O2 at the January SBCK meeting for $2/bottle :).

i agree with you..Does look like what Dave has labeled plant material.

I have a gal of the Nolvasan too that I have used for cleaning. :D:D I prescribe that all day every day for my patients so if it's good for them it should be good for my chams;)
If you remember why you didn't go with Virkon S please let me know because it looks like I will be going that way at least right now:eek: I would have jumped all over that 40 vol, you would think it would be easy to find in a city like Phx but so far NO luck:mad: Did you use it on your bio vine too or did you just boil them?

Well I guess the best thing for you to do at this point is have your vet run a fecal to confirm what it really is.

Will be Dez. I am waiting for some good samples that I know aren't old. So I expect that I will run some more this Friday. I am going to have to get a pretty good handle on what I am looking at because my vet charges almost $50 a sample. Personally I think reptile vets should be running these samples for 10-15 and if they are needing to make money make it on the meds, exams, cleaning supplies etc. I know that if that was the case I would be dropping off 10-15 samples every 3mo or so. But as it is I guess I am just going to have to spot check my results with vet checks and make sure i become competent in running them myself. You all in FL are so lucky to have great reptile vets to work with!!!

Anyone know of a good site to order fecasol in the gal size and fecal float vials by the 50?

Never mind.....Found it. 49.97 shipped for a gal of fecasol and 50 float vials

The specific gravity of the solution is determined by the type and amount of the salt. It's the specific gravity that makes the eggs of parasites either float or sink. So if you make your own make sure you know what specific gravity you need for the type of eggs you're looking for, and measure it when you make your solution. Otherwise you'll get lots of false negatives.

LOL I am not making my own...but I do have a specific gravity analyser from making beer:D
