Hi everyone!
My name is Bianca, just decided to join this forum because I got a Panther on Saturday and pretty excited about it.
I've been keeping Chameleons for more than a year now. I also have 3 Pythons, a few Tarantulas, 2 giant African land snails, and a Cat.
I have a friend who owns an exotic reptile store, he called me up one day and told me some idiot had brought in about 20 newborn chameleons, he'd taken a chameleon from the wild who happened to be pregnant, and that quite a few had already died that day. He asked if i'd be interested in trying to keep the rest alive as he didn't have time, he also said he'd have to put them down if he couldn't find someone to take care of them.
I knew nothing about chameleons and knew they were indigenous (very illegal to keep indigenous ANYTHING in South Africa), but took the challenge anyway because I couldn't bare the thought of them being put to sleep.
So a year later and two out of 20 survived. But unfortunately one of the two got tail rot about a month ago and died, and shortly after the other one died too. They were Dwarf chameleons so were always very small and vulnerable. I was really upset about and it left a huge void in my life.
So, I decided to go out and get myself a Panther Chameleon, he's 4 months old and I got him two days ago! I'm really excited about it, he's adorable, I've got him in a medium-sized flexarium for now, have already purchased a 100 gallon flexi and put a lovely Ficus in.
Considering this is my first 'exotic' or 'tropical' chameleon, does anyone have any advice regarding the husbandry and basics of keeping a Panther? Anything to look out for?
(I do already know about calcium, vitamins, spraying water etc)
Nice to 'meet' you!
