Hi everyone!

My name is Bianca, just decided to join this forum because I got a Panther on Saturday and pretty excited about it.

I've been keeping Chameleons for more than a year now. I also have 3 Pythons, a few Tarantulas, 2 giant African land snails, and a Cat. :)

I have a friend who owns an exotic reptile store, he called me up one day and told me some idiot had brought in about 20 newborn chameleons, he'd taken a chameleon from the wild who happened to be pregnant, and that quite a few had already died that day. He asked if i'd be interested in trying to keep the rest alive as he didn't have time, he also said he'd have to put them down if he couldn't find someone to take care of them.

I knew nothing about chameleons and knew they were indigenous (very illegal to keep indigenous ANYTHING in South Africa), but took the challenge anyway because I couldn't bare the thought of them being put to sleep.

So a year later and two out of 20 survived. But unfortunately one of the two got tail rot about a month ago and died, and shortly after the other one died too. They were Dwarf chameleons so were always very small and vulnerable. I was really upset about and it left a huge void in my life.

So, I decided to go out and get myself a Panther Chameleon, he's 4 months old and I got him two days ago! I'm really excited about it, he's adorable, I've got him in a medium-sized flexarium for now, have already purchased a 100 gallon flexi and put a lovely Ficus in.

Considering this is my first 'exotic' or 'tropical' chameleon, does anyone have any advice regarding the husbandry and basics of keeping a Panther? Anything to look out for?

(I do already know about calcium, vitamins, spraying water etc)

Nice to 'meet' you!

Do you know the calcium and vitamin schedule for a panther?
temps?

ANd welcome!
panthers are awesome! ( i dont have one... yet.. but its next on my list after i finsih breeding)

welcome to the forums! It is fun watching their colors come in! Do you know what type of panther is is?...Sambava, Ambilobe, Nosey Be etc...that will give you an idea on what colors to look forward to!

welcome to the forum, i see you are from africa that is very interesting to me anyway, i would love to take a trip there one day...

Thanks everyone!

I don't live in the rough Africa, I live in SOUTH Africa, which is quite civilized. If you've only ever heard that we have lions as pets and that we ride elephants to school - WE DONT! :) We drive cars and work in skyscrapers. We have to drive about 6-8 hours to see any wildlife. :)

I don't know the exact Calcium and Vitamin schedule. I've been told the crickets need to be dusted twice a week but I do it about 3/4 times a week. I've also been told they don't need any additional vitamins. The calcium I use has a D3 in it anyway.

I know he's an Ambanja Blue, found a really amazing photo of what he'll look like today! I can already see the blue and red coming out! Amazing!

And he eats like a champ! He's still a bit skittish and I don't plan on handling him too much, but hopefully he'll get used to being stared at! Hah!

Thanks for the replies, good to be here! :) I'm part of a South African forum, if any of you want to take a look around. It's really good and full of good advice:

Welcome, its good to have you on the forum!:)
In regards to supplements, you will need a vitamin.
We generally recomend this schedule, it seems to work, and keep the chameleons happy and healthy:
Calcium without D3 at every feeding
Calcium with D3 twice a month
Herptivite twice a month

:eek:You dont ride elaphants to school? Giraffes then? :p

Question, does your chameleon get natural sunlight? Or does it stay inside?

Also, will you please tell snake kid from SAReptiles forum, that his chameleons will NOT get any UVB through a glass window. So for the winter he will need a UVB bulb when he brings them inside:)

Great! Thanks! I'll get some calcium without D3 and the supplement this weekend and follow the schedule.

He'll be outside for Summer with natural UV light. I spray him twice a day for a few minutes, he also has a home-made dropper. In the winter I'll put him inside with a UV bulb and heat.

And i'll tell Snake Kid, thanks!
