i want a dubia colony really really badly...but my mom refuses to let me get roaches :/ and its too cold to keep them outside. ive tried to convince her they're beetles not roaches, but she can easily look it up and know the truth, ive tried to convince her they dont smell, dont make noise, breed on their own, and are wayy cleaner than crickets, but she still wont say yes! help?

just do it and put them in your closet! :D or keep them in the garage...

dont have a garage, but closet could work ;) bad thing is, we wear same size clothing...so shes always snooping in my closet...would give her quite a scare tho :p

Either just do it, and try to hide them, or move out. My mother would of never let me have them, no matter what I said. She would of never let me have a chameleon either. She says they are the same thing as snakes.

A cricket is just as "repulsive" as a roach to some people.

Some moms can not be convinced. No matter what you say.

My Mom hates them either so i simply use a box she can not see right through.
She would never open one of my feeder-boxes/bins because those things give her the creep :D
Or how about under the bed?
It helps the roaches if it´s warm, then they´ll grow and breed better

u already mentioned my trick, i told by gf that they are madagascar beatles... or tell her you will be only getting males and there is not worry about any escaping cause they cant breed...

Unfortunately most moms have "mom super sense" so there may not be a way to keep them. I know my brother and I were never able to hide things in the house from our mother growing up.
Why is it that calling them beetles helps? Aren't most people as afraid of big beetles as roaches? I know I am. Is it just the name and connotations with it that freaks some people out?

i dont think its the roaches themselvs they are afraid of, its the fact that everybody thinks they will escape and breed and destory the house...

thats exactly what she thinks!! but i explained to her that they are dumb and cant climb any smooth surfaces whatsoever, so the chances of them escaping are slim. plus theres no way they will get past my cat ;)

Small container under your bed sounds like the best solution. That's what i would do.

well, i have a loft bed :p bed on top, futon on bottom, and if uve ever had a wooden slide out futon, ud know theres no space down there :/ good idea tho..maybe i could under my brothers bed ;)

my moms definition of a roach is those creepy crawly things in the ghetto that scatter when the lights turn off and get into everything and breed like crazy..she used to live in a trailer park like that before i was born so i can understand..but if kept correctly, that wont happen :/ so giving it the name beetle doesnt give her those memories :p

I simply have them in the open where all the other feeders are too.
My mom would never think that i´d simply place them where everyone can see them easily as we already argued alot about them when she found the ones i was hiding in the cupboard :D Well, guess she has to look into the obviously hidde box, but the one that is simply standing in the open seems to be uninteresting ;)

soo, ive been bugging the crap out of her today about it, and heres what she said: "if i ever see one loose in the house, out they go, and you with em!" i dont think she'll actually kick me out.. :p

And i don´t think she´ll ever see one, even if one would escape ;)
Also it´s really safe if you keep them in a high plastic container.

I was able to keep a snake hidden from my mom for a month.. I think you can keep the roaches without them escaping lol.

Just make sure you keep the lid on whatever you're keeping them in. Not sure if they can climb though..that'd be a good thing if they cant.
