hey everyone
so i was told its a good idea to buy a humidifying spray for my chams to prevent dry skin and shedding problems, so i bought one from the pet store but i have a quick question befor using it. as i read how to use it and everything, i was wondering is there anything bad about using humidifying sprays i should know befor using it ? should my chams be a certain age befor i start using it ? is it ok if i spray them after spraying them with water? (and yes i am aware its only used once a day). whats your opinion about using humidifying sprays?
just in case you are wondering witch one i bought its a zilla humidifying spray, tropical mist.

id like to bump this because i had a similar question.

i was watching jdogs youtube tutorial on jacksons just to see if i could get any misc info i may have been missing, nothing new for me except the humidifier. and ive got to say im inspired. now based on the ammount of water vapor output i was seeing on his one enclose (even with leakage at the bottom of the hose) i was hoping to get a hold of one that i could spread across maybe 4 enclosures at a slightly lower intensity than his.

now i checked out walmart.com and noticed this one

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Safety-1st-Soothing-Mist-Ultrasonic-360-degree-Humidifier-Blue/15833569

there were a couple a costumer reviews that made it sound promising

"I use this humidifier for my plants and they love it!"

and

"I was very impressed with it. It's easy to fill, easy to operate, and blows out a LOT of mist at the higher setting."

those make it sound pretty damn promising for only $30

i want a for serious foggy haze.

anyone have any personal experience with this or other ultrasonic humidifiers, that would help me out?

thanks

A humidifier is a great thing to increase ambient humidity.

Having one to "spray" into the tanks isn't really necessary, if they are all in the same room the vapor is so fine it will distribute, it wont' really stay where its being "shot"....so the whole room will become more humid.

@Alex: are you talking about the same thing DekuScrub is? I didn't know Petsmart sold humidifiers....and I'm not sure what you mean by once a day? Is this some sort of chemical?

EDIT: I googled the product you are talking about. That is a useless product that is nothing but marketing....I would just return it. It may be of some (VERY MINOR) use where an animal is abused/injured, but if your husbandry is correct something like that should not ever be needed. And tbh, if you have an abused/injured animal, you should be using real "medical" stuff and not that spray still...so eitherway I wouldn't use it ^^

http://www.petco.com/product/108568/Zilla-Tropical-Mist-Reptile-Spray.aspx

Ingredients:

Aloe vera, vitamin B1, vitamin B3, emollient, water.

Its basically just water sold to you for $9.

no alex wasnt talking about the same thing. he was talking about those "vaporizers" they sell specifically for herps, but they look like the output would be fairly little and the price would be way too much.

if you look at jdogs youtube tutorial

you'll see what im trying to emulate. ive got mists going all the time but it seems to me the vapor from a humidifyer such as his would drop the temp of the enclosure through evaporative cooling and allow me to provide a cool moist zone below room temp almost constantly.

no and i wasnt talking about vaporizers either and i did not buy it at petsmart. i have a spray to help prevent dry skin and shedding problems and you spray this on yur cham and cage it says. i posted a pic of the bottle i have.

Hey Alex, I know what you mean, it is easy to get sucked into these things in the reptile aisle. You see these products from these companies that you trust and they seem like they could be of some use but sadly a lot of them are of little to no value. The longer I am into reptiles the less I shop at pet stores. You quickly realize that you can get better things at Lowes, Target, Hobby Lobby, etc.

I also shop at those kinds of stores for little things i need for them also. i recently bought a type of water fall for them because my veiled wouldn't drink from the one we bought at the pet store i have no clue why and now that we changed it iv actually see him drink from time to time so i understand what you mean. so is the spray i got and the humidifiers that dekuscrub is talking about used for the same purpose? i am new to this humidifiing thing for chams, if i buy what describe is talking about i wouldn't have to use the spray bottle i got right? or are they 2 different kinds of humidifiers with 2 different purposes?

you were talking about the spray bottle crap? my bad, i assumed you were talking about those foggers they sell for like $60 if youre having serious trouble with a shed you should get some glycerine.

crap? so your tryna say the bottle i bought is no good? and I'm not sure if they are having shedding problems but when they start to shed they only shed like one spot every time, like for example my male veild, last time he shed, his head and like half of his body sheded perfectly but the rest didnt shed, so my buddy told me to try the spray bottle i bought and its the one in the pic i posted. is the thing your talking about and the bottle i bought used for the same purpose? "helps prevent dry skin and shedding problems"? it also Say's fortified with rich emollients and aloe vera. if that matters

sry i didnt mean to call it a crap product with the "rich emollients" its gonna be better than just plain old water. never used it myself

Hey Alex...... Its good stuff!!!!! Before I got my Mist King to keep humidity up better, I used this stuff every shed. My previous panther had problems at times. It was my fault im sure.... I had no way to hand mist when I was at work all day. When I got my new cham I got a Mist King and I have no problem keeping levels where they should be. My new guy peels his shed in less than 1 day;) But if I see he is having trouble I would not hesitate to use the spray. I have a bottle with my supplies:)..... It doesnt seem to hurt thier eyes either..So dont wory about spraying his head too. I was useing the Zoo Med Repti shedding Aid...Its a smaller bottle

I use a dripper on all my Chameleons. I drip for at least 1 hour per day, more when it's hot. I also hand spray thier cages for extra humidity. IMO you do not need a humidifier for Jackson's nor do you need to constantly spray them. In the summertime I use a automatic mister like Mist King or Aqua Zamp to help cool things down. My Jackson's never have problems shedding.

Personally I would not use such a spray. if your Cham is having problems shedding it needs more water and/or a better diet.

Don't expect your Cham to shed all at once. Sometimes it takes them while.

from what i have read online about it it seems that its very good for chamelons and dont see what could go wrong from using it if used right. did you mist your chams and also use the spray? or did you use this spray instead of misting? is it ok if i keep misting everyday and use the humidifying spray 2-3 times a week?

I believe the spray you are useing is definately a waste of money if you are misting with it all the time. If your cham is haveing trouble shedding I would try it. Like I said I was useing Zoo Med Repti Shedding Aid only when he was shedding. There are lots of products out there to seperate you from your money;)

i spray them with water 3 times a day but i just wanted to know if this pray i got would be good for them but doesn't seem like its that good or is very necessary to use once a week like it Say's unless they are having shedding problems. ill just save the bottle and use it if they are having shedding problems.
