hello.it`s my first time here....
i recived a chameleon from a friend last week from sahara...i understood that`s a Chamaeleo chamaeleon...
i want to ask you...how can i find out if is male or female?
also i would like to know if is necesary a small fountain or just a bowl with water....and some other thing that are necesary to make a confortable terrarium ...for her/him ...

NO fountain they just breed bacteria. easiest fix for water is a couple steps, a cup with pin hole to drip into cage preferably onto some leaves it can drink off of also u should get a mister that atomizes the water and spray cage several times a day humidity is import. Also very iport is uvb light in floresent tube style and proper temps. there is tones more to feeding, vitimins etc. but that will start u off i think. the pros im sure will add more and corect what i have :)

Female or Male. males have a spur (little bump) on back of rear foot cant miss it.

thank you very much for your advices...
i really want the best for my chameleon...so...nothing will turn me off trust me :p:p:p

Setup :depending on what cham you have it is best to have a screen cage, at least 24x24x36. you will want to place, i perfer live plants and real branches and sticks in the enclosure. i like the pothos ivy and scheffelera (abracola (sp) ) i would also put fake vines and such to climb and explore.
Lighting: you will want a Repti-Sun 5.0 linier uvb light. ( ! ! not the compact flor. ! ! )
you will also want a regular house bulb of 75 watt to 100 watt for his basking needs.
NO Substrate NO fountain, breeding groung for bacteria and a impaction risk too.
You will want a mister bottle, Or a misting system so that water can build up on leaves for him / her to drink, and you will want the cham to be misted a few times a day for at least 10 to 15 min at a time so the humidity builds up and water droplets form on the leaves
On your food, varity is the best thing. Crickets ,horn worms, silk worms, super worms, and waxies as treats is what i feed my 2 chams.
Suppliments : rep-cal w/d3 repcal-w/o d3 and rep-cal herptvite multi-vitamins
also you will want to dust your feeders with these suppliments.
on feeding your feeders you will want to gut load them with carrots, potatos, leafy greens, collard greens, and apples befor feeding your cham.

if i forgot anything someone else will pick up my slack ! ! :D

it looks like a female and i would guess maybe about 7 months * i could be totally wrong on the age.

Is the one on the screen the same chameleon?

Here's some information that I hope will help...
Exposure to UVB allows the chameleon to produce D3 which in turn allows it to use the calcium in its diet. The UVB should not pass through glass or plastic. Direct sunlight is the best form of UVB but you need to give the chameleon "shady" places so it can move out of the sunlight if it wants/needs to.

Since most insects we use as feeders have a poor ratio of calcium to phosphorous, its important to dust the insects before feeding them to the chameleon with a phosphorous-free calcium powder such as Rep-Cal.

I also dust twice a month with a vitamin powder that contains a beta carotene source of vitamin A. Beta carotene can not build up in the system like preformed vitamin A can. Excess preformed vitamin A can prevent the D3 from doing its job and lead to MBD.

If the chameleons get no direct sunlight, I also dust twice a month light with a phos.-free calcium/D3 powder. D3 can also build up in the system...so don't overdo it.

Appropriate basking temperature aids in digestion and thus in nutrient absorption. An incandescent household bulb in a hood can be used for a basking light. The wattage should be whatever it takes to put the basking area in the mid to high 80's.

Gutloading the insects and feeding them a nutritious diet will help too. Crickets can be fed a wide variety of greens (dandelion, kale, endive, collards, mustard greens, etc.) and veggies (carrots, sweet red pepper, squash, zucchini, sweet potato, etc.).

Calcium, D3, vitamin A and phosphorous all play parts in bone health and its important for them to be in balance. You need to look at what you supplement with, what you feed the insects and what you feed to the chamaleon in the way of those things.

Water can be supplied by misting the cage at least once a day. A dripper can also be set up to drip on the leaves of a plant in the cage.

I don't recommend substrates or fountains/waterfalls.

What country do you live in?

i`m from romania...

i tried fo feed my chameleon with worms but he is not eating them anymore...someone told me to try with chiken breast ...is it ok ?

if your gonnna give him chicken breast make sure its the kernals(spellin sucks)extra crispy just jokin they will eat most insects just make sure if you do use wild insects there are no pesticides in the area they are collected avoid spiders go for crickets grasshoppers roaches moths etc

i tried to feed him...with worms and crickets but he is not eating ... i tried 4-5 times today do give worms...but without succes :(

If its a female, you should be providing it with a place to lay eggs. This is egg laying time for C. chamaeleons. If it is a female and she has eggs inside her and you don't provide her with a place to lay them she will likely die eggbound. You need to provide a container of washed playsand that is moist enough to hold a tunnel and at least 10" deep.

Chicken is not something that should be included in the diet. Its an insectivore...so it will eat crickets, grasshoppers, roaches, silkworms, etc. I doubt that it would eat earthworms either.

tomorrow or monday i will recive desert sand for her...
hmm...its ok to feed her with dubia?i have a lot at hme...

perfect.i have a lot of dubia :) ...also she eated 2small roches :)
i putted also some sand ...in case that she will lay eggs....hope everything it will be ok ...

thank you very much for your help...before open this topic...i readed a lot of other topics...but didn`t understood too much things...now i think my chameleon will be very very ok...maybe next week i will put some pictures with the new terrarium ...

best wishes guys ...
