lower humidity levels with dehumidifier

Haha I told you. I think Beman is only spoiled because you're so "fancy" haha! Spoiled brats these chameleons
It’s funny because in my normal life I don’t buy the expensive brands in anything for myself but with him I buy him the fancy stuff. Partly because I need his enclosure to be as automated as possible for when I have to travel for work but also I have this strange idea that if it’s more expensive it will be better for him. So yeah he is spoiled. I do the same for my daughter. So my loved ones do get spoiled.

Can I be your chameleon? Lol

@Beman I'm having similar issues too, so you're not alone! I'm in Virginia, so totally different part of the country, but it's pretty humid here and lately my humidity levels have been crazy high! (Around 70-75% in between mistings o_O.) For the short term and for instant results I borrowed an old dehumidifier from a friend - so I can't give any quality recommendations. Honestly it's a piece of junk. I do turn on a ceiling fan to get more air flow in general. Also within the past 2 days switching my home from heat to AC has already started to make a big difference (general things to keep in mind). I might need a long term solution, but I might also be moving my entire cham setup to a different room in my home to test out humidity, temps, etc! The things we do for our chams! haha. If that dehumidifer works for you can you share the brand and model with us/me please? :)

I feel your pain. Ok so I bought this one. See pics. I spent $200 on it but it works! Really well. I was worried about buying one of the cheaper units since our humidity is so high I did not think it would be strong enough in the 500 sq feet room. We don't have air conditioning only central heat so that one I was not able to try. In the 8 hours that I have had it hooked up I just had to dump the water. I could not believe that much water came out of the air. I am running on normal use not turbo. With it on normal it does have a consistent humming noise to it. Kinda like if you have a fan running. Not loud but if your sensitive to sounds then it may make you crazy. This one also has the option to connect a hose for it to drain out of. This morning the enclosure was reading a 70% and the house was at 63%. I got the enclosure down to 52% after it was running for about 8 hours. I am going to leave it on over night to see if it pulls from the house to lower the humidity in his enclosure to 40% tomorrow. I run a fogger in his enclosure from 1am-4am and have a few gauges to measure highs and lows so I will have a better idea in the morning what it did overnight in his actual cage. Per the instructions you have to run it for 24 hours straight on the continuous setting then you can set the comfort setting to keep it the exact percentage you want. I will update tomorrow with where my overnight cage readings are. :)

Beman,

I’m probably showing my inexperience here, but why is it so important to have daytime humidity low? My veileds are in my greenhouse and the lowest humidity they’ve ever seen is 45%. It’s usually in the 70s. I hope I’m not s$=*ting the bed here. In my limited experience, good air circulation has been enough to avoid the pitfalls that come with higher humidity. Again, I’m no expert.

Ok sooo this is based on my reading and listening to the chameleon breeder podcast. I am by no means an expert. What I have learned is that since Veileds come from Yemen where their daytime humidity is lower and their night time humidity is high because that is when fog comes in along with a significant temp drop at night. So the target daytime range is 30%-50% for daytime. I am trying to mimic everything according to his natural environment.
The other battle with having high humidity in enclosures when you have the heat lamp and lighting as well is it becomes hot humid air that they are breathing. Which can lead to a RI. So your targeting both day lows when you have heat and night highs when it is cool. While also dealing with trying to get great air circulation.
With everything in his enclosure I am trying to mimic as much of his natural environment as possible. I am new as well. Only 5 months in. I rely quite a bit on a few of our very respected members. I am constantly learning as I go. LOL it has been a never ending cycle of buying new things and making additional adjustments.

@amfire125 Ok so I ran the unit all night. Normally my night high in the cage is 85% with the fogger used for 3 hours. The highest it got was 64%. I woke up to it being at 52%. So I think you can easily expect a 20% drop in humidity levels with this machine. I will be testing it tonight by turning it off at 10pm so I get my night high that I want and then turn it back on at 6:30am. See how long it takes it to level back down to 50%. It is simply nuts how much water it pulls out. I have now had to dump it 3 times since plugging it in about 9am yesterday. It turns off and beeps when it is full. It would be beneficial to hook it up to an external draining system. I am not very good with that stuff though. I am going to try to figure out if that is an option for me lol

I am also going to mess around with my misting sessions since the only one he had yesterday was at 5pm for almost 3 minutes. He was already moved into sleeping position by then and he actually came out when the misting turned on like he was looking for the water. I do have a little dripper that runs consistently as well.

@Beman Thank you! My humidity numbers are looking good for now.... but this is helpful and I think I still need a dehumidifier too. Old, poorly insulated condo life adds an extra challenge to chameleon husbandry, haha.
