Male panther with dull colours.

Right thinking of buying this blue bar panther male.Only prob i have its got no real good colours and does not fire up to well either.The owner says its because he is housed with another male blue bar and is the dominant one.( i no 2 panthers should not be housed together and i have told him this).
My question is will he colour up once he is housed on his own without the stress of being with the other male.Or are some males got hardly any colour.His a year and a half old.
Ps he is 100% male.

The brightness of his coloris such a relative thing. It's really up to you on whether you think he is bright or colorful. He may 'brighten' up or he may not.

I think at a year and a half he's not likely to dramatically change in colour from what he is now.

You can't necessarily count on any color change just because the environment changes. He may brighten up if he is allowed to see females periodically. I have to tell you that I have a couple of dull colored Panthers that are extremely fun to have around. I enjoy them for their personality. I won't breed them but am glad I have them. I don't even really think about their lack of vibrant colors. If you want to sell offspring it's important to consider coloration. If not, I personally would worry more about health then color. I know a lot of members enjoy showing off their vibrant colored chams. They are fun to look at. But I enjoy the posts where people talk about how much they enjoy their chameleon, colorful or not, much more. To me they aren't like a painting you hang on the wall. They each have a personality that can be explored and enjoyed

Oh i forgot to mention he will be for breeding stock so colour really is a biggy.I can see what you all mean about the health and personality being number one preference and i am 100% behind you all.I think the funny side in Chams beat colour hands down.
But i can only just make out the colour of the blue bars so could even be a cross breed ,and i dont really want to go down the line of cross breeding.I really want to keep the species true.So at the mo i can only take it from the sellers word its a blue bar.

Do you mean the bars are almost white, but are just barely blue? Some people like the white on another color look. What exactly does it look like?

If the intent is to breed, and you are not into hybrids, I would stick to getting your sire and dam from a reputable breeder, where the lineage is 100% not in question. In other words, maybe not this particular animal.

Ugghhh!

Seeing that picture frustrates me. I hope a good keeper buys him quickly just to get him out of that substrate filled tank! Ugghh! Part of that boy's dullness can be due to an approaching shed and the fact that he is in a dry environment. You could not mist him as much as he needs to be misted without causing damp and unhealthy substrate. He probably has dry skin.

He does look quite healthy though. He does have some blue barring along with the red barring. Not sure what you mean about keeping the species true. You can breed blue bar Ambilobes (if that's what he is) to other blue bar Ambilobes and come out with red bar Ambilobes. Totally different looks can result from that combination in the same clutch. It isn't a matter of purity with the barring. A clutch produced by a very vivid male and a female from a vivid male can produce some vivid offspring along with some much less vivid offspring.

This boy is not THAT dull looking. I think he will shed soon and have a nice red/green combination with some blue near the back area that many people find quite attractive. The red looks very nice under that dry skin. Other people would consider that combination something they would not mind having in a bloodline. I didn't like red bars years ago, but really like them now. His attitude in that picture is very appealing too. Not scared at all. Looks like he wants to walk out on to your hand. I really hope someone in your area with experience snatches him up. I'd be driving to get him out of that substrate if I were near you. There is something in his attitude I like. I sure hope he gets a good home

He is very beautiful..I agree with what the others have said....someone needs to give him his own space and a female to look at every now and then...his color is there its just muted...it may be that he is smart enough not to flash up any where near the dominant male and the dryness of his skin......

thanks for the feedback everyone.I have decided to buy him and give him a proper home.Being in with another male and that substrate boils my blood.I also dont think his under a good UVB light.

That made me day! I was trying not to think of him. I really like him. Being in the US it was not something I could do anything about. I think you will be very pleasantly surprised at how he looks after some proper care. I look forward to seeing new pictures later on. I think there are some nice colors waiting to come out

i have told that guy bout tha cham on another forum, he said he bought a pair of adult chams and they were both male?????

if he did any research before buying them im sure he could have spotted the difference a male and female!

then he said he wanted to swap for a female, so i asked him if he was going to house the male and female togeather, he didnt answer!

sad really isnt it...

i have also told the guy in a different thread that if he wants to sell the cham maybe he should take the male out of the viv and out of sight of the other male to see if he does show a bit more colour and take some new photos cos he looks stressed in the first pic,

heres his new thread with new pics at the bottom, the cham DID brighten its colours and looks a nice cham, dont think its a blue bar tho

Right got him.his a well layed back cham.He just layed on my arm with not a care in the world.Tried putting him back in viv and he kept climbing back up me lol.Went past my viv with my females in and striaght away he started head bobbing and dying to get to them.He went a very nice red colour showing off so he can colour up when he wants only time will tell.
Fowlers the owner didnt really have a clue .He said they where a year and a half when he got them and was told they where male and female.I told him that should have been a big give away at that age as both had a big bulge on the base of the tail.He has got another male and wants to breed when he can get a female .I suggest that he done a bit more research on chams in general before breeding.Was going to swap with on of my females but thought better of it.Soon a sell my female to someone with more knowledge of panther chams.
also i think he is a red bar well im 100% sure.
