! ! MBD ! ! Help

I have a rescued veiled w/ mbd & I use a reptarium on it's side. This way he still has lots of room. As he has gotten stronger I've add more branches for him to climb. He has a potted pothos in there & there's where he spends all of his time. I cup feed him because he can't move fast enough to chase the crickets down. I got a cup that fits right under the ledge of the pot. It works out great.
It sounds like you probably caught the mbd in time. It makes me very happy that you did the right thing by getting it to the vet. If you didn't this pic could have been the outcome. This is Rocky, my rescue. His previous owners didn't do the right thing by him.

Howdy Littlevillage,

If that is a recent photo of your Veiled, it looks like he has a hemipenal plug just waiting for you to carefully pull out .

Jeremy l said..."We ended up calculating a dose of a liquid calcium and gave it to zuse with a shot"...will he be getting more shots? If not, what else will be done to help him recover?

littlevillage...what are you doing to help your rescued chameleon recover?

yes i am taking him in tomarrow to get another shot. and then on monday we will up the dosage 1 more time. three shots to kick start then the rest will be through liquid calcium and reptical

Jeremy-these are the 3 most highly recommended supplements...How old is your cham? We can help you figure out a schedule. In an earlier post you said the UVB was new. Have you not had UVB on him since you got him? If not-that was your problem from the beginning. It looks like both chams you have had are having some issues-that is when you really need to re-check your husbandry/daily care.

He seen a vet when I first got him & I was told that he was to weak for a shot. The only thing I can do for him is to make sure his food gets dusted every day. 5 day calcium, 1 day calcium w/d3. He has improved & can climb some. When I first got him he couldn't climb at all.

the calcium i was using was the flukers with d3. i have since bought the rep-cal herptvite and calcium. i was meaning that the reptisun 5.0 linier was a new bulb when i got it and that it was not an older bulb. he has been under it for 2 months i have had him for about 3 months. at first i had the wrong bulb but i changed that. i have gone over all my husb. and all is correct in the fact of lighting temp. and food. i think i went wrong in the supplimenting part. and i did not think about vitimens until recently. my panther is actually very healthy in the since hes eating and very active. theres no weezing or sneezing or any sort on his breathing and he is good and meaty but not fat. he poos often and it all looks the part. i have since wondered if i was doomed from the start for buying my veild from the pet-co. they do not feed their babies what they need and there is NO uvb of any sort, and im wondering it that was a starting cause of mine having problems and then me not knowing supplimenting schedules and all that was needed. i know so much more now than i did but it may be too late for one.

Zuse having breakfast ! i think he was happy which makes me feel good :

i mixed calcium with d3, rep-cal herptivite, cricket guts and 1 wax worm for fluff with water and mixed and crushed everything all up until it was liquid and put it into a syringe ( w/o the needle ) and fed it to him and he enjoyed. he was hungry. then i fed him 3 live crickets by putting them into his mouth. otherwise he dosent eat unless i open his mouth and stick the cricket in. then toped it off with water. i think he feels better. once i got a good bit of food in him he started to color back up, and it made me feel good because i think he felt good.

Be super careful that he does not aspirate (suck the fluid into his lungs). Also mixing Herptivite and Recal with D3 is bad and you can potentially overdose him if you use too much.

I am so sorry. I sold some chameleons to a pet store once, they didn't put the proper lighting on them and when I went back they had MBD real bad. There was no bringing these ones back and they needed to be put to sleep. I feel so bad whenever I see this.

pics of my poor guy :( i feel like i let him down because hes in this condition.
i have lost 3 nights of sleep because i keep feeling like i have doomed his life when he really has not even got a fair chance.

i am being careful on not leting him asperate the liquid. it seems like what im doing is wrong, but it is all i know. no one has told me on how or as to what dosages to give him the calcium and vitamins or how to feed him. that is why i asked for help on this.

I have never personally had to deal with MBD so I am very sorry that I can't help. This is the right place to be though when you are in need. There are so many people on here who have helped me when I was first started out. I was criticized too, so don't worry. I was glad that I was because it only made things bigger and better.

i dont mind the criticism thats fine, but help would be great too :D if i do something wrong ill fix it immeaditely and learn from it so i will have better husbantry in the future and knowledge of the issue

I agree 100%, I started off with reptariums and compact bulbs. I was torn up and ripped apart about those, which was good. I went out and bought a whole bunch of reptisun 5.0 linear tubes, aluminum screened cages and built about 50 cages out of wood so far. Some of the things said on here may be blunt, but ultimately the most of them are for the better. The first person to properly inform me on here was Justin Carl and I really thank him for that.

Jeremy-did your vet tell you to start him on calcium supplements-for now, as long as he is getting shots of calcium, I think that is enough until he is done with the shots and hopefully eating on his own. We really are trying to help you get through this. One more thing-since you did have the right UVB on him, there is not a glass or plasic cover on the UVB light is there?

Jeremy, You should be fine calcium wise with the injections from your vet. It's a super high dose to get him on the right track again and then if I remember correctly you are getting the liquid calcium stuff which will make things fine as well.

I don't have a real good dusting schedule down myself, so hopefully someone will chime in.

The way you are feeding is exactly how I kept hermie alive. If your cham is like Herm, he will get the hang of it and open his mouth up and ask for it ... sort of like a baby bird eventually. I also tried baby foods with him ... he particularly enjoyed anything with apple and sweet potato. Additionally you might look into "carnivore care" it comes from Hay Oxbow company (www.oxbowhay.com). My vet likes this better than the baby food because it's meant for sick animals. It comes as a powder so you can add water to make it the a consistency that your cham enjoys.

well my vet dosent really know what to do becuse hes not a true herp vet, but with that said i didnt want zuse to go a day without calcium so that is why i put the calcium in his food. as for the repti-sun light it is the one in the pics of his tub and it sits directly on top of his screen cage. he is able to get within 3 inches of the uvb if he wants. i know yall are trying to help and i am very greatful i am just stressed because i did this to him and i am trying the best that i know how to help him recover.

Jeremy-you are trying and that is a good thing. I ask about the cover on the light since UVB does not pass through glass or plastic, even if he can get within a few inches it will be useless if it has one of those plastic lenses over the bulb. There have been a few cases on here where people did not realize that and their cams got MBD.
