Medicine for Gout

Hey everyone I was interested to know if anyone knows the medicine usually given to a chameleon that has gout? I have been reading all the information on the forums and can't find a specific medicine for treatment if there is one.

The only medicine I have ever heard of being used was Allopurinol. But, that was 3-4 years ago. There might be something else used now.

Has a vet confirmed that it was gout?

I know that in some cases, gout is thought to be caused by high levels of protein. I also know that it is caused or linked to renal failure. Do you know if this is what is happening to your cham?

Vet hasn't confirmed it yet he said blood work is next step. What is renal failure exactly in chameleons?

A death sentence I'm afraid. There kidneys fail then it's lights out lets hope it hasn't gotten that bad for your cham.

Theres nothing you can do for their kidneys? No treatment or that allopurinol medication?

Well I guess I could be wrong, but I have never herd of dialyses for a chameleon. maybe he don't have gout, or possibly your vet can treat it before his kidneys fail. I herd it's a up hill battle if your cham gets it though.

Yeah thank you for your input I appreciate it man. If anyone knows anymore information about this please post to help this chameleon!

It's caused by high uric acid levels. These are usually from proteins(meats), though some proteins are lower in purines(the cause of the elevated uric acid levels). Some veggies are thought to increase this(spinach asparagus), though their are conflicting ideas by researchers. Veggies though, if even a cause, would be far lower impact than meats.
Not sure if certain bugs would be a cause, would be a good study.
