Monkey-Tailed Skink?

Has anyone come across a Monkey-tailed skink/prehensile tailed skink? I have been looking for one but the only breeders I have found want a rediculous price for them. I know we dont import them anymore and their numbers in population are dropping, but dont see how that justifies charging an arm and a leg. If anything I feel like they should have a more attractive price to promote breeding.

Anyways I figured I would ask around.

my sister has some & she is talking about selling one. What is your idea of am arm & leg and I can see what she wants for hers. She is in Missouri.

I have been seeing them go for $400-1,000 but dont want it bad enough to pay that kind of money. Heck I want a Panther but wont spend $300 on one just because they are a beautiful pet.

I live in IL. (60586) so I dont even know if the shipping would be affordable from MO. I do however appreciate the response.

They are tough to find these days, hence the higher prices.
They are great reptiles to work with. Years ago, I had a family of them.
Don't get bit by one, however. They definately are the bulldogs of the reptile world.

I don't think you're going to find one for less than $400. Heck, I've never even seen them that 'cheap'!
If I remember correctly (someone correct me if I'm wrong) their reproduction rate is pretty low and they aren't imported anymore.

Suzanne, you are right on both counts.

They stopped importing them back in 90' because they were placed on the endangered list. Some time around 00'-02' they were taken off the list but I dont think we ever started importing them again. As of right now I am not sure if they are on the list or not. I beleive they were endangered because they became so popular as pets and they could'nt reproduce fast enough.

I understand that breeders cant make money off selling them in quantity so they make up for it on the (per) price. They are a pretty chill reptile that I would'nt mind having around for the next 15-20yrs. Im a bargin shopper/cheap a$$ and dont mind waiting. Being a reptile forum I thought maybe someone might know of a rescue or something along those lines.

You don't EVER make money off breeding these guys. They have 1 yes 1 baby a year at most. Usually they only have 1 every other year. Beleive me that won't come even close to feeding the parents. That is one of the reasons I want me sis to sell one of hers - she has 6 of the guys and can hold all for them. She weights about 96 pounds.

Hello, I`m willing to pay the price fora Monkeytailed (Corucia Zebrata) as a matter of Fact I`m interested in 2 or 3....Will someone point me to the seller? I`m definately interested!

My vet Dr. Alfonso raises them and has quite a few. Not sure if he wants to sell any right now but if you pm me your contact info I'll have him contact you if he's interested.

Here's a couple of pics of me with one of the babies in this thread.

I worked with these before- had 3 babies out of my pairs over a few years time. Not long after the ban began, a neighborhood kid came along and cut my cages and let them out. Only time I've ever been vandilized and I never found the skinks again...

:(

Price is probably too low for what they are-

They can live 20 or 30 years.
They have a baby or twins only every year or two.
Babies take 3 years or so to mature.
Breeding groups require care because this is a social lizard that can suddenly turn on it's mate and seriously injure or kill it if not given enough space.
These skinks form bonds within groups- I saw babies on mothers and fathers backs and saw protection in the group. I never tried it, but supposedly babies raised in constant contact with a human can "bond" to a human and see them as protection in a strong way that is likely not found anywhere else in the lizard world.

Contrast that with the price of a fancy ball python and how common those are and how many babies they have and how often they have them.

Price is much too low in my opinion. That's true of lizards across the board when compared with prices in the snake world.

Trust me, anyone with monkey skinks now a days is trying to breed them and is treating them like the gold they are- the idea needs no promotion by lowering their value...

And for you guys who don't remember how cheap they were at one point- I got my group of 10 for $40 each wholesale before the ban...

You are right that was a few years ago. Both my sister or Ivan Alfonso would knock you down with money if you had any that cheap. i don't think we will ever see those prices again.

Ivan Alfonso's email is [email protected] He hasn't said anythting about having any for sale right now but he does have a baby so I am not sure. We sent 3 of my sisters group down to Ivan and he is doing wonderful with them.
