My Cham eye is close and swollen

Hello,

I am having such a hard time with my cham since I have got him. I am not to sure if I am understanding their living arrangements or if I am doing things completely wrong. I have had him for almost a month now and he has had a trip to the vet already because my cat knocked down his cage which he had hurt his tail. Now after recovering from that his eye is completely closed and has been from the past 3 days. I havent though anything of it, just thought he was sleeping alot but that wasnt the case. Apparently his other eye on the other side has been open the whole time when i thought he was sleeping. Today i have noticed that his eye popping out, where I knew right away something had happened once again.

I have notice that this has happened to him while my son was here, he had the cham in his hands 24-7 and would never put him down. I see him trying to move his eye while its closed and I have seen something red in his eye. I need help so bad and is embarressed to bring him back the vet so soon after just having him there. I need help on what to do.

Welcome to the forums. I'm sorry to hear that you have been having problems with your cham. Chameleons need to have an environment that's very similar to how they live in the wild. It's often hard for us to mimic everything perfectly. I have a blog for new keepers linked below with the way that I keep veileds and panthers. I have has great success keeping them this way. As far as his eye it could be a number of things such as an eye infection, something in his eye, his lights could be causing it or even an unsafe plant you have in the enclosure. I'd recommend filling out tne Ask For Help Form below and provide as much detail as possible to each answer.

Thank you for your reply back, I tried to fill out that form but when I bought him I never really looked at everything the man was putting at the cash register. The man was the one who said I needed all these things. I dont even really understand the whole lighting thing, but he told me that I needed this uv light i believe and its swirly light build. he gave me a water dish and a rubber plant that he can climb and some flexable sticks that i can bend. I keep him by the window because when the sun shines in he seems to love it. I turn the light off at night time as I know the light only stays on for 12 hours.

I just recently bought this new plant last week, its vines that he can climb with cloth plants. I had wood chips on the bottom because the mad said i needed it but the vet told me to get rid of that asap due to feeding issues. He eats crickets 4 of them a day, full size and dusted about 3 times a week. he hasnt drank alot lately but today he wouldnt stop. I will gladly show you pictures of how i have it all set up and maybe you can tell me what I am doing all wrong. I know i have to be doing something wrong somewhere and its bothering me because i have to fork out alot of money to maintain him.

I will upload everything that P.J.s pet store told me I needed.

If you bought from a pet shop they are forever giving out incorrect information strickly because they do not know about keeping chameleons and just want to make a sale. From the pictures it looks like you have quite a few things wrong. If you would go down through my blog I have all the items that you will need, a link to a picture of each item and where you can but the item at. Most chameleon supplies are not sold at local pet stores and have to be ordered on line. You still need to fill out the form. I am not familiar with most of the items in your pictures. Do you know what kind of plant that is in his cage? I can tell you that you need a couple of live safe plants (there's a list in my blog) and allot more vines and branches in your cage.

Okay, thank you so much for your reply I am going to go down your blog right now and look at everything. I knew I was doing things that are wrong. It never made any sense when the man was just giving me one plastic plant and a stick. He never gave me a heating light which my vet said he needed and i went to the store and told the man off, for giving me the wrong light. I was mad because it light cost alot of money. That plant in there that you see is a new one, now i ask them last week at the pet store which one is better and they told me the cloth one. I find that the cloth plant doesnt even keep the water on it long enough for him to drink. Since i got that plant he is able to climb up right up to the light which i though was a good thing but maybe not.

Like i said i am going to go threw you blog, and thank you so much for helping me. I am so clueless to this and never thought taking care of one would be so hard. Thank you so much.

Sorry your chameleon is having problems. I just wanted to let you know for future reference that chameleons never sleep during the day unless there is something wrong. So even if both of his eyes were closed during the day, that is not a good thing. A lot of people coming into the hobby do not know this fact about chameleons. I hope you can get to the cause of his eye issues.

Thank you very much for the info, I def need to study on these animals. I actually bough him for my son not knowing he isnt really the best pet for a 3 year old. Now i am taking care of him so I def need to do my homework on them. At night time what should the temp be in his cage ???
