My Pygmy Breeding thread

Ok, I dont think i need to get in any springtails :) The few adults i've been putting in over the last couple of months have bred! There are quite a few in there now, so i dont think i need to worry :)
There are also loads of baby woodlouse, so i'm guessing the pygyie didnt munch all the adults i put in there ;)

I had a quick peek (pushed the top layer of soil off) and one of the eggs doesnt look so great. I have nothing to compare it to but i dont like the way it looked. I covered them back up... so its back to the waiting game :D

How long over the 90 days would you give them?

in what way does it not look ok? i read some threads about eggs looking dodgy only to hatch perfectly! dont despair yet! it may look funny because its due to hatch? im very excited for you!

my springtails have gone mad too, I only bought one tub from Dartfrog and its done both my tanks and there are loads of new little ones everywhere! my tropical woodlouse though hide and I never see them, ever! only when im doing a major clean which isnt that often.

Have you looked today?

Thanks for the encouragement Mike :D

I have scanned the enclosure, no little ones today.

I'm not sure how to explain it other than it no longer looks as white/stained as the other three. It has a more blotchy look to it. It is still nice and plump, no dents and is still the same size as the others. So i still have faith :D

I am so miffed, I think i have a gay Pygmy. Marlow really doesnt show any interest in Mini at all. The only times i have seen them in the same general area is when Mini walks over to him.
I just got offered a job, so now regular money will be coming in again soon, i'll be saving up for an enclosure upgrade and another female or two :)

Lol at the gay pygmy!

Karl is like that at the minte to be honest! I put sheila in with him to recover after her laying eggs, as Kev who she usually lives with has the horn constantly! and Karl just started to gape at her and puff himself up. So after a few days I put Sheila back with Kev, who was very pleased to see her and I put Veronica back in with Karl, and he acts like he is allergic to females. Cant get away from them quick enough! funny little things!

well I am now on the hunt for a Veiled! managed to get my own way and gota reluctant OK to getting a new cage! going for one of those reptibreeze xl's in the near future for a baby veiled. but for the minute, he is going to go in one of the exo terra tanks and the pygmy are getting shuffled round to accomodate it. poor karl is going in his own little tank I think for now.

Wow, sounds like you've got the 'bug'!! (shhh, dont tell anyone, but im currently talking to someone about a Panther ;) its such a good deal and is quite local. Just going to talk to the old man now. Maybe get him to sub me the £ hehe)

Back to my Pygies, glad to hear someone else has a fussy male :)
Love them to bits though. Mini gives some of the best faces... and Marlow is really calming down, i very rarely see him dark now :D

Not a happy camper

Mini has decided to turf the eggs out of the hole to lay a fresh clutch!!

Just came home and was doing the midday misting and what do i find? Mini with her rear in the hole and the first clutch of eggs laying on the surface!! I really dont want to disturb her until she has finished laying (I can see 3 white tic tacs :)) but the 1st eggs are so close to 90 days!!

* Pause *

I couldnt leave them.
I've placed the two i could reach in a tub with the soil. I was really careful not to tilt them any more then they already had been while she dug them out.
My sister in law and I were thinking that maybe she dug them out because she knew they were infertile? But when i placed them in the tub we had a good look at them. There is no fungus, no dents... nothing that makes me think they are duds... and then they wiggled!! Both of them are twitching away :) surely thats a good sign?! Or has Mini's digging caused the babies to start 'drowning'?

Im going to get the other two once she covered the hole.

I think I might get the new batch out as well. She clearly has a corner she likes to lay her eggs.

Please keep your fingers crossed for us :(

fingers crossed mate! maybe they are ready to pop now if they are wiggling? hopefully you will be able to get the others out soon. If you are going to get the new batch out get yourself some vermiculite or perlite from Wilkos, only cosy £1.50 a bag. i tried to store Monicas in soil and they started to get mould on, but they seem to be fine in the vermiculite now.

fingers crossed for you mate!

Thanks for your repy Mike :)

I did get the other two out, and they both had a little wiggle too :)

They are currently taking up space in mum's display case in the kitchen (safest spot) I thought she might kick up a stink because i moved some of her collectables around, but surprisingly she didnt say a word. I knew she loved my chams too ;)

I had some vermiculite (from wilkies too, bargin) So the fresh 4 have been placed in that and are with their brothers and sisters in a seperate tub.
Will sort out the 90 days and eta on the calandar a bit later.

Mike, depending on how successful these hatchings are, are you still up from swapping some females in the future?

The clutch that are due to hatch any day now :)

You are very lucky they survived.

The first clutch of 4 my female laid....they all didnt survive.

Then the clutch of 3 she laid 4 weeks later started to show signs of leaving the world but then i made their substrate a little more wetter and the dents in them went away.

Now i am left with 3 eggs. Wish me luck

i'm also so excited with my spectral pygmy eggs. I still don't know it's fertile or not, but it seems OK so far. No rot or shrinking or any sign of bad thing. ^^

Nope, no babies just yet :(

There is movement but no sweating.

I'm leaving them alone, dont want to keep pestering them... but i can see them through the glass door and with the use of a little torch.

96 days... *excited!*
