this is my first chameleon, he's a senegal and his names paulo. :)
I've had him for about a month now and he seems to be doing really good.

I'm pretty sure he's a male, but im not 100% positive, any help on determining his sex? thanks!

Nice picture!
You need to show us a picture of the whole body though ... specifically the base of the tail.
Where did you get him from?
Have you had a fecal done? He is most likely wild caught and carrying some parasites.

Excellent picture. Nice looking specimen too! Tell us a little of his(?) history; where you got him, approximate age, that kind of thing.

Have fun with Paulo!
Cheers,

hopefully this helps a little bit. I purchased him at a local pet shop, but they didnt know much about him, so i'm not sure about his age. From nose to tail he's about 6 inches.

would you need a better picture?

Yeah, without your finger in the way. Males have a visible hemipenal bulge and I can't quite figure out if it's there or not from your picture. At this point I'd hazard a guess that you've got yourself a Paula.

Now is that 6" from nose to vent (bum) or total length?

Again, she (?) looks to be in really good shape; you've done a good job in raising her. I do recommend getting a fecal done at some point to check for any internal parasites. Oh, and here: http://chameleonnews.com/?page=article&id=164 is a good article on the senegalensis that you might find interesting.

Cheers,

alright, i'll try and get a better one as soon as i can. my camera isnt all too great. could you possibly try to describe this bulge, because paulo/paula:p has something right at the base of his/her tail. it looks like it bulges out to me, but i really wouldnt know haha. where would you suggest getting a fecal test done, just a veterinarian with reptile experience? thanks again for all your help!

Hello again Lefty. :)

What do you mean you don't have a good camera; that first pic is really nice.

I found a pic showing the difference between a male and female Furcifer cephalolepis. Here: http://www.adcham.com/html/husbandry/glossary/hemipenal.html Note the larger errrr "man areas". Your Senegal Chameleon will have this bulge if it is a male, maybe not quite as pronounced, but you should be able to see it. Also note on the female cephalolepis there is a small bump just after the vent but it tapers off very quickly; that is normal for females and maybe what you are seeing in Paulo/Paula? Most species of chameleons can be sexed by the hemipenal bulge (or lack thereof), but in many species, this difference can be VERY, VERY subtle.

Any reptile vet should be able to do a basic fecal float. You may have to make an appointment with the doctor first to establish a decent patient relationship. At that point, it may be better to look around for a good reptile doctor. Here is a breakdown of reptile veterinarians by state: http://www.arav.com/USMembers.htm

And if she is only 6 inches total length, she is still quite young; not a baby, but she still has a little more growing to do. Senegal Chameleons are seriously underrated and your girl(?) is very pretty.

Cheers,
t

Lovely senegal! I would go for she as well...it looks like her tail tapers and doesn't bulge...but I've been wrong before (too often) ;) Great pics!
