New Female Veiled - 1st-time owner with questions regarding overall setup and diet

She will fill in her hole pat it down perfectly like nothing happened , then go back up to her basking spot . She will be very hungry , need hydration and look much thinner .

Okay, great, thx! Should I be giving her calcium daily v. every other day since she may be pregnant?

Julia said..."FYI, my sister said she had some yellow spots earlier, along with dots all over," ...the yellow splotches indicating sexual maturity always stay once they are there. In post #19 you showed photos...none of them had yellow splotches so imho she was not gravid in any of them. Are the photos in that post or post #48 recent? Post #69 shows Kristen's chameleon with receptive colors. I need to see a photo of your own chameleon. Does she go black in the background like this one is?.

The other thing is you could bring her in for a vet visit . Have some X-rays to be sure . If you really believe she's producing eggs but not showing Big girl colors .

Do chams need to be sedated for x-rays? I don't want to sedate her as the local vet isn't that well versed with chams and there could be a problem resulting from inexperience.

I honestly don't think she is ready . I think she was upset with being looked at . They get sassy like that . You know her better then I do . So if you truly think she is producing eggs , is not showing colors . I would have some X-rays to know for sure . Looking at her I would say no . I would never want to be wrong and something happen .

You said..."If she starts digging, I understand that I ought to leave her alone"...you just don't want her to see you watching her when she is digging.

You said...my replies are in red...
  • At this point, do I still put crickets and worms in the cage or will she not eat during the digging period? You can feed her as long as she is not digging.
  • Also, should I mist the leaves in the cage during the digging period? You can mist the cage when she isn't digging....when she's up in the branches.
  • And it is said they like privacy and to cover cage with a sheet or towel if they start digging. Does this mean that overhead lights should be turned off (as could be fire hazard to have lights on top of cage with towel/sheet covering cage)? I don't cover the top of the cage and I don't use cloith. You don't want a fire. You keep the lights on the regular schedule.
I'm still trying to figure out if she's even gravid. Re the vet...why now??

She does not have the colors , but I have read several Accounts where there was no color change . I don't want to say no and it be a yes . We have only had Frances to go on . She was a definite yes .

I hope you are right :) What concerns me is that she doesn't mind being looked at, she sits on people's hands and arms, and she is always green. She let me hold her for several minutes today without even squirming. The only exception to her being green was one time when I had to hold her somewhat snugly to give her medication near her eye and be careful to not get it in her eye. She did not like that and turned bright alarming colors, but she didn't try to bite. However, she has never been uncomfortable with my my sister or niece, nor has she turned colors in front of any stranger seeing her for the first time. She was even friendly with 5+ veterinary staff whom she had never encountered before. And she is pacing more than usual and seems a little chubby. But it could mean nothing and just be a fluke that she was unusually spotted and colored when my sister saw her last night. I just want to err on safe side by having all my ducks in a row :) Thanks for the info and thanks to Lynda for sending the pics.

Yes, those pics are recent. But when she didn't see my sister come into the room she was very colored until she saw her, then the color changed totally back to normal within a minute.

If you have a proper place for her to lay the eggs in inside the cage and you don't disturb her she should lay the eggs if she is producing them. If she shows signs of lethargy or sleeps during the day or sits low in the cage or phantom lays then you need to be concerned.

BTW...I'd still like to see a recent pohoto of her.

Thanks for your advice. Actually, the pics I posted yesterday are recent - in post 48.

Thanks for this info. And I'm also not sure if she's gravid, just being careful in case she is...
