Normal amount of time spent hiding???

I purchased a sub-adult veiled chameleon about a week ago. For a few days, she was very nervous... hiding a lot, not eating much, and dark in colour... normal, I assume. For the past few days she's been eating well and her colour has returned to vibrant green.... so I'm happy, because I think she is too. But, I've noticed that she spends a lot of time hiding, often sleeping during the day. She seems to hate water (misting), and doesn't always react to having new feed introduced to her habitat. Any comments??? Your help is greatly appreciated.

I've done a lot of research before purchasing my first chameleon, and I think all the talk of how fragile chameleons can be has turnd me into a worry-wart. Do I have reason for concern?

Camille, try offering different food everyday if possible, and yeah its normal for them to hide all the time, its what they do :)

When you mist try to use HOT water since when you spray, it comes out warm....My cham will run from cold water but just lets me spray him when its warm.

Sleeping during the day is not good....Try filling all this out for some better answers

Everything you described is normal for a newly acquired chameleon, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SLEEPING DURING THE DAY.
Fill out the information above and we can help.

my female hides constantly, and only comes out when im not around. (i catch her in the act eating and drinking sometimes, but she mainly just hides) sleeping during the day is not good.

i was watching my pink female hunt a grasshopper, took her at least 30 minutes and she snagged it and started munching and i saw one of her eyes look at me and she froze! lol she stayed frozen till i went around the corner, then i heard Crunch Crunch Crunch, when i looked in i saw her gulping it down.

Cage type - Screen terrarium (all sides and top), 24x24x18

Lighting - 1 x 26w repti glo 5.0uvb, 2 x 25w daylight sun glo

Temperature - 78-82 during the day, 70-75 at night, measured at the front of the terrarium. i'm not sure how warm at the basking spot, although she seems comfortable there.

Humidity - 50-70%, maintained by misting 3 or 4 times a day.

Plants - artificial

Location - in bedroom, near traffic. there is usually a fan running, not directly at terrarium. i really don't have a choice for location as it seems our cats extremely stress her out.

My chameleon - veiled, female, sub-adult (7-8 months), i've had her for about a week.

Handling - she seemed very comfortable with being handled at the reptile shop, but i have only handled her once since bringing her home. she didnt seem comfortable.

Feeding - mostly crickets, some mealworms. fed a dozen or so crickets daily. mealworms are fed a few at each feeding. crickets are gut-loaded.

Watering - misted 3 - 4 times daily for about a minute with warm natural spring water. i have seen her drinking only once.

Fecal matter - mostly brown with some white.

Thanks for the help guys.

Also, she is bulging her eye frequently and rubbing it on branches. It looks like there is a white ring around her pupil that is not present on the other eye.

It just occured to me that perhaps she appears to be sleeping when in fact she is not, due to what ever is wrong with her eye. Perhaps she is keeping the one eye closed.

this is not normal, with one eye closed they cannot judge distance of anything realy, if this is happening i would take her to a vet!
