Olive, today's vet visit...MORE slugs

Olive is still the same pretty much, not any better, but for sure no worse - so that is good - and YAY - NO more slugs so far today
I spoke again w/ my vet, and also briefly with a Jax specialist in Ca. - the 2 things they both said were:
1) these are all the same clutch ( just a really big one  )
and 2) Oliver must go for a bit - neither was really sure if his being so close to her is having any effect on this- but she KNOWS he is in the next cage, she can not see him, but she knows he is there, and when she sneaks out of her cage, she is seeking him - but it is not the right time for her to breed- so they want him to move up stairs away from her - poor buddy , so he will move up, and I will stick the babies in that slot -
as for the great sperm debate- here is what I can tell you - Olive did NOT breed with Oliver, she did have babies in March, now, I would think they CAN store the sperm, because some of these "slugs" do have some development - you can see little eyes and hearts on some of them- there is a post w/ a pic of it- so, the sperm being so old, loses quality apparently - it was enough to start the egg, but the baby died early on - now, to confuse us all more :p - Olive lives outside all summer- so was the sperm bad, or did she eat something that caused the deaths ? ( she about got her butt whooped when I saw her eating all my breeding mantis who got to close to her cage, and she picked off 7 of them - little snot she is :p ) so I do not know if she ate some weird thing also - but she never acted sick, or off in anyway - until the last few days -
thanks again everyone for the support - I can sure understand her being tired, and exhausted , I know I am ~ XXX your fingers for NO slugs tonight , she seems to be having all these at night? will keep you all posted if any changes. She is going to get another cal/ shot on Sat, and I am picking up a drug store from my vet on Friday - just encase

That is a good point about how she seems to be passing all of these at night/during her sleep. Could just be preference or how her body is choosing to deal with this situation in an attempt to reduce stress. Maybe she isn't consciously passing these.

goodness... well here is hoping that she is done with her extra larg clutch. keep us up to date and we are all still sending well wishes and hugs your way.

well, let me tell you- THEY ARE WORKING !!! :D today, no slugs, she is eating better, and her weigh is now 115 grams :D ( she started this at 148 - I would have to check my records, but I think thats what it was ) - she still looks rough, but she was well enough to go outside, and get some sun :) her skin is still a bit "baggy" looking- but she lost alot of weight in a short time - her belly is even now starting to go down a bit - she has a bloated look , just a bit, but not anything like she was - I am way more hopeful now- I am still watching her like a hawk , but no longer feel like a waiting buzzard :p - I meet with the vet on Friday afternoon to pick up some more meds he still wants her to have, so at least one more poke in her arm, but then I hope that is it :)
I just sold her last son today- it was hard, but the lady was SO nice, and also my silkworms ( only 2 so far - lol ) have started to make their cocoons - they look like little cotton balls - really cute so today is a GOOD DAY :D

thanks EVERYONE for being there for Olive and I :)

Glad to hear she seems better today. We've all be anxiously waiting for updates. What a fighter! Keep us posted on how she makes out overnight and tomorrow.

you bet :) and thanks again everyone - I may have gotten a bit mushy- cry babyish- but I was just heart sick at thinking I may lose her- you all were a HUGE help and support, and I thank you so very much :)

I would like to ask for your advice and anyone else that reads this as well?

You are very welcome.

I am supposed to pick Chamele up on the 4th (Mine that had the same episode but not so bad) I had taken her back to Petsmart because I had only had her 24hr before she started to drop the slugs. They have had her under Vet care at my request for about 3 weeks. The only reason that I am worried about picking her back up is I requested an ultra sound or x-rays to see if she had passed them all. I cannot seem to get a straight answer out of them if this was done. I have gone to see her 4 days a week, since taking her back. She is looking good active and comes straight to me as soon as she sees me. Their Vet (PetSmart) out here have never dealt with this before and I had to tell him what it was from the information that I had found on here.
My Vet knew what it was and has advised against me picking her back up. She has said it might be better to get another female form somewhere else. So, what should I do? Pick her up on the 4th or look into getting another female from someone else like one of the breaders on here?

well, from a "business" point of view - maybe another would be a wise choice- but - let me disagree with myself :p I did not give up on Olive, and truly, the vet cost- OMG ! I could have bought many Jax- but she is my girl, and I love her- and from what I have seen , slugs are not all bad, and this with Olive was a FREAK case - I would feel better a young chammy have slugs, and acting fine, it is better for her to have not had babies, and how she got lucky and did not get preg, - is good- please do not let Olive be your guide, she has had a very unusual clutch - but Olive is a HUGE female - and I do think crossbred with a T-Rex - :p - I would go get that little girl if she is acting fine, and well, you already know when she had these , so you will already have history on her- a new one, if it acts odd- is it eggs? you could have the same thing all over- just my 2 cents- :)

That's fantastic news, Littleleaf! :) I'm so glad that it's finally over, and Olive can go back to being her feisty self.

This little lady is huge as well and as far as I know had never even seen a male. The PetSamrt had her for several months. They got her at about 2-3 months and I figure her to be about 5 to 6 months now. They said that they had had her for about 2 months. She was a good 6-7 inches long from noise to base of tail, but what sold me on her the most is she loves to be held. I would put my hand in her cage and she would come to me right away. I watched her for 3 weeks at the pet store and played with her there. From day one she came straight to me. Still does when I go see her. Got mad and Hissed at me when I went to give her back yesterday for the first time. She did not want to go back to the store clerk.
thanks for you advise and I think that I will go and get her on the 4th. She is such a sweet Girl.
Olive has a great Mom.
thanks again :D

I have no doubt they get to know you- I am glad you are going to go get her :) sounds like your little girl will have a great Mom too ;)
I would ask if anyone thought, how many she had - just so you know, and also get a weight on her when you get her home- keep records - it really helps when you have to "think back" - Olive gave fair warning this was coming- her weight just kept going up in spite of starting her on a diet- so a base weight is a good thing to have- Olives ideal weight is 97 grams - she is still very weak, but losing the weight nice and slow - next time if she even gets over 130 - she is going to the vet for an ultrasound, I dont know if this could have been avoided, I dont think so, but when I asked if I had done something wrong in my care, he said " you have done everything right, if she had not started so healthy into this, she would be dead"

So glad this is shaping up to be a happy ending, but fingers and toes are still crossed for you and Olive. Hopefully she keeps heading in the right direction! :D

Once I took her back she never had any more (so they said) she had about 12 that I cleaned out of her cage.
when you see Olive's Vet in the morning sice he seems to know alot ask his opion. that would give me to vet's opions. I will be taking her to mine to establish care and I am ready for the lecture..lol. But she knows how I am with animals, she does take care of my Zoo...lol. You might ask if there is anything special we can do to keep this from happening again. I know it is a question I will be asking mine.

glad that olive is still doing good ....still sending the well sishes your way and the hugs too.

thanks
