So one of my panthers is making this phh noise I have heard it could be upper
Respatory infection so I brought him to a vet and they didn't know for sure
So they said it wouldn't hurt to try giving him medicin so they gave me some and I would use a syringe and I used it for the amount that they told me
And the noise still has not stopped!
Is it upper respitory infection?
His cage is super clean and he is still eating.

My 5month ambilobe does this. He always has. It happens if the sun moves and he doesnt like it, i jostle his tree and he doesnt like it, if i scratch my self and he doesnt like it, even at nite, he does it in his sleep. Im talking about a "puff" noise. I would spell it like Phh. Ive always interperated it as a grrrrr or bark when he wants to assert himself. Its not often he does it though, maybe once a day, somtimes not at all, somtimes lots if theres somthing to "upset" him. Is it just occaisonal? Or is it constant? Any wheezing crackling mouth open kinda breathing going on?

My cham which is 5.5 months old also makes this noise. It sounds like he's blowing air out of his nose really fast. He does it every once in a while. I don't believe its anything to worry about.

Mine do it as well, it's like a displeased huff. It's not quite a hiss, because they do it with their mouths closed, but they make it if I'm holding them and they get antsy, or I move too quickly with them.

If there is no excess mucus/saliva in your chameleon's mouth, there may not be any infection. When mine have had RIs, they always made more of a gasping noise, which is usually what alerted me to the infection. Then I notice the mucus and into the vet they go.

my previous veiled did this, we determined that it was F*** you in chameleon language, my new veiled doesn't do it because he goes straight to gaping and hissing and completely skips the phh noise

I have one that does this as well and at first I was concerned about respiratory infection, but when he showed no signs of illness and after further observation I agree that it's a cham version of "F off".

yes it only happened when i hold him so thanks everyone , I'm happy i don't have to worry about this anymore

I think I would find another vet! A good chameleon vet should be able to determine if a cham has a respiratory infection or not I would think.

Both my Chams do this. It's like a sigh. I just thought it's like blowing your nose - clearing the airways!

I have to go with Carol on this....the vet should not be even medicating him unless he has determined what and if there was a problem. I'm glad that since you were concerned you went the extra to take him to the vet... but I think I would still find another vet.

I have one that says the Phh of F*** to me too.

Hissing sounds

I have a chamelian names Neon, he does the gasping thing but there's no exas mucus or anything. he just does it when you pick him up, its sort of a "your getting on my nerves sort of thing"

o. k I'm glad I search for old threads before I start a new one :)
Always find it so useful to read comments etc.

Any how my 1year old female panther has just puffed for the very 1st time that I'm aware of, she was trying to climb out so I picked her up to put her back, as I was putting her back she puffed as such with mouth closed

I can't see any excess mucus or sliva, so should I be worried?

Thanks

I used to catch wild chameleons and they always hissed and flattened their sides to look bigger. I assume yours is protecting himself from the invader (you).

I haven't got a clue, she's currently producing eggs not due to lay for another week or so.

she's constantly trying to come out so maybe she was annoyed that i put her back in!!

bless her scared me though , lol
