New to the site and interested in getting cham, have been looking through everything on having one and is a Schefflera plant poisonous to chams (Umbrella plant) i think have seen it is and it is not. Thanks

because they are low light plants ;)

Put one outside with any direct sun and it will be dead....

Mine did crappy in low light. No new growth was noticed until I added more light.

Perhaps it was just too little light. It's the Melleri cage I'm talking about. I kept the 2 hanging lights over the scheffs off because they caused too much heat. The scheffs immediately started dropping leaves. Decided to chance it after reading your thread on house compact floros and since adding them they are thriving. Keep in mind that on top of this cage is a 48 inch dual floro with 1 10.0 and one 6500K plant bulb. The distance this light is from the plants may have everything to do with that though.

a 6500K light will give the right kind of light for plants.....

I know...remember who your talkin to. :p *cough*planted tank guy*cough* lmao

LOL I don't think I made myself clear. My bad. I'm saying that even with that light, my scheffs were not making it. The coil bulbs I added are 5500K That's at the low end of the ideal spectrum for plants but it's better than nothing. Oddly enough they do not make coil type floro bulbs in the 6500K range. Its been a wile since I looked but a year ago I contacted several lamp dealers around town looking for some...nodda.

Yeah I was noticing that... I think I have seen some more recently but they aren't cheap.... If I was looking at the right thing. Mike Monge had some really nice lamps on his setup at the SD show. Kent and I were commenting on them wondering what spectrum they are

They do make 6500k coil florescent bulbs. I am a designer and I keep my displays calibrated to a 6500k white point as well as keeping all the lighting in the room 6500k. I use 26w(100w equivalent) 6500k bulbs. I am able to find them at any type of hardware store by me (home depot, lowes), but they usually don't keep too many. Here's some I found online for you.

Very cool!

I noticed the CFLs at HD wer only 5000k or maybe less. I would like a couple of these but 8 bucks... sheesh lol.

That's what I found at both HD and Lowes Kev. I found the 5500K at Walmart.

Thanks for the link Dual. You have no clue how happy this makes me. Too bad I don't do tanks any more, but the cham plants thank you also.
