To the rescue

BugCatcher

New Member
Hello everyone. I am new to the forum and wanted to say hello as well as share what my buddy Danny and I will be doing tomorrow.

Danny found an add for a Veiled Cham and after seeing the pics posted we made the decision that we could not let this guy go to possibly someone else who may not have the ability or will to give the proper care.

Lets hope all is well and we will be the new owners of this guy.

Welcome!

It's nice that you are willing to take care of it. I can't see the picture very well since I am on my phone, but it looks pretty healthy to me.

I noticed you're in ft. Myers. I'm going to college there in January. :)

Thats cool. Which school, FGCU?

He does look pretty healthy from the picture. Its a crappy picture though. The Cham is being housed in a 55g aquarium by its current owner. He said he has had him for about a year now. He also said that he is of good size, about two hand lengths or so.

Yup!

That's cool. Is he charging you for him, or is it an adoption?

Make sure you get that guy into a full screen enclosure ASAP. Chameleons will get sick inside of aquariums.

I wish it were straight up adoption but he is asking 50 bucks. Not a bad price for him really. The cost isn't an issue I just wanted to give this guy a good home more so than anything else.

No worries Dave, he will go right into his new screen enclosure as soon as I get him home.

Hey, as a soft hearted cham addict... I just wanted to say thank you for rescuing that veiled, it looks in the pic like he's on the ground which is not too good for them. I hope he's in good health for you and wish you the best of luck with your new kid!

o... and welcome to the forums ^___^

What a good Thanksgiving thread! Thank you for taking that animal in (and paying for the privilege!). You'll find lots of great support and information here to help you.

Rescues are always special, good for you guys!

50 bucks? I would do it if the owner promises to not get another without proper research lol who am I kidding I would do it regardless ;)

Goodluck, when you get him post pictures of him in his happy new home!

Worse than I anticipated

Howdy everyone. Well we went to pick this guy up this evening. He is much worse than I really anticipated. The guy we got him from said that he was eating but honestly I couldnt be sure.

He was housed for 1 year in a 55 gallon aquarium with sand in the bottom and a few branches, the heat source was one of the red lamps and no UVB...

We asked if he dusted the cirx and if he was gutloading and he said he fed the crix a slice of apple or slice of potato. He did however hand over a jar of Flukers calcium w/ D3 and cricket quencher that looked barely used.

This guy is going to need some serious TLC to get him healthy.

thank goodness you are in Florida, lots of sunshine for this boy, as often as you are able

I am not a Veiled person, and maybe its the pic, but his casque and tail area look thin/dehydrated, hornworms can help with that, along with a variety of feeders.

Poor baby, thank you for truly rescuing him.

Im sure someone has sent you the veiled blog, which will give you a great start.

Jann or Dave can add immense knowledge as well.

Once you get him in a proper setup you will see a difference, he will bounce back, between lighting, feeding, housing, supps he will smile at you for taking him in and giving him a chance

Oh, poor baby. At least there are no obviously broken limbs. I bet you find he perks up quickly in your care. While very fragile, they are oddly resilient and bounce back from pretty pitiful situations to live healthy lives.

Did you check to be sure it's a male?

I'm not gonna lie. When Duntin and i picked this little guy up he looked really bad. Your right, he looks very dehydrated and very malnourished. He didnt move much while we handled him during our inspection and he seemed to be asleep the whole time. (eyes closed) I do have some silkworms i was going to let turn into moths so i can get eggs, but i think we need to feed them to him asap. I also have Dubia that we will feed to him and of course crickets.

I do have one question. Can we spray water directly in his mouth? Will he swallow if we do?
We will keep this thread posted of his progress.

Oh, thank goodness for you guys rescuing this fellow! I can't wait to hear about updates on how well he is doing! What a nice thing for this guy - to finally have a good loving home!

Bless you for taking him! Yes, get him out in the sun as much as you can!!! I don't know how he survived a year without no uvb(maybe he took him outside every so often?) I am sure you will fatten him up in no time! I am sure it must have been hard to not want to tell that guy off. Nothing makes me more upset than to see a chameleon in an aquarium with nowhere to climb. Please keep us updated!

What a wonderful thing you have done :)
I really hope your week is full of sunshine for that poor cham. I am very happy you rescued them no creature deserves to be treated like that.

I am sure great things are in store for you and your new buddy:):D

I think it's great that you rescued this poor guy. I live in Naples, so if you ever need anything, just let me know. Good luck in getting him back in shape!
