Trioceros johnstoni bwindi

jurgen, by all means you know more than me about chameleons in general, but I see the spine and rive of the male, I have learn that thats how I see the chameleons are undernourished:confused:

You are wrong in this, many species in the trioceros group can show this more "slim" look;cristatus,montium,quadricornis...they look sharp,if the animal is acting normal, have round eyes and eat and drink normally you don't have to worry fast.
I import several hundreds chameleons a year ,i never see one coming in fat.

My Johnstoni female passed away. She saw a vet the second day I had her and again 4 days later but could not be saved. I am posting this for the thread as information only. She was gravid with 10 yolk follicles that were not fully developed. The vet did a necropsy and this is how I found out she was gravid.
She was very dehydrated, had a severe respitory infection and some nodules on the inside of her ribcage. They are going to look further today to determine exactly what those nodules are and will let me know. I post this only in the hopes that it will help some of the other keepers who purchased these to know what they might want to look for. Good luck to everyone with these fantastic chameleons.

Real sad to hear Steve:( its never nice to lose animals.
If i look at all the postings than it seems majority is doing well and settling in nice in their new homes.
Sadly a few persons lost an animal,i guess we all dit our best to give them the best care but it seems a 100% perfect is not possible to get with these farmed animals.
I hop you guys can work together to switch/loan some to each other and work things out.

Jurgen,I knew going into this that some animals would be lost as we all know that happens with imports and more so with farm or wild caught animals. I did everything I could to save her and I blame no one. I'm saddened by the loss but knew full well that this could happen. I think the fact that so far only a few have been lost speaks well for the overall health and quality of this shipment. Again I wish everyone well with these chameleons and I will get more in the future. :D

My male virunga has not eaten much since I got him. He's eaten a few roaches but nothing like my females. I'm not really sure if he just doesn't eat much or if he not eating enough.

Today i started seeing him with his eyes closed. I put him outside for a few hour but that didn't seem to pep him up much. I went ahead and gave him 5 ml of bug juice. He took it like a champ. A little dab on his nose triggered him to open his mouth.

In administering the juice... I heard him wheeze. I'm guessing that he has a respiratory infection?

As leedragon said he looks very dehydrated. Have you seen him drink lately? I had to actually drip water on the nose of mine when I first got them to get them to drink.

Hope he snaps out of his funk.

I recomend Orbax for respiratory infections. (he looks ill)

Thanks. We are at the vet now. He is very stressed. We are getting minimal blood work and an xray.

They were not able to confirm a RI but are still giving him preventive antibiotics. They said that he was dehydrated so he got 2 ml of fluid right under the skin with vitamin B in it. They are teaching me to give the fluids to him so I can do it tomorrow and possibly Saturday.

I'll reply with details when we are done.

I really hope he can make it,i think hydration is very important now together with an antibiotic cure.
If he eats try to give him silkworms they are very nutritious.
I wish you all the best(i send you a pm)

Thank you Jurgen. your support has been great. I'm not going to let this guy pass. It's not an option. There is no dollar amount that is too much for his care. He will be feeling better by Monday I know it in my heart.

A pic of the awesome vets at the vet clinic giving my guy fortran (sp)?

Things got much worse while at the vets. The vet was trying to draw blood and may have accidently paralyzed him in the process. He can't move his back legs and they are a different color than the rest of him. He can move his tail but not much. He is back home hanging on a branch. I can only hope that this paralysis is temporary.

I have no clue what if anything that i can do.

Enough of the down side..

I'm declaring that my female bwindi is the most beautiful female chameleon in the United States as of right now. Look at the blue dots on these sexy legs!

Jason, I am so sorry that your male (and you) are going through this. I hope he recovers fully, and soon. Your female is absolutely amazing.

Where was the vet trying to draw blood from? The standard location for blood draws in chameleons in the caudal vein and I'm having a difficult time figuring out how paralysis could have occurred taking blood there.

I am very sorry to hear about your little guy. Hopefully it's just temporary and he will regain the use of his back legs soon. My guys, past and present, have had blood drawn many times and I've never see this happen. It has turned their tail black before all temporary except for one and it stayed black forever.

In the third picture.. She tried to get blood from where the green starts. right around his back legs. She tried two or three different positions then gave up thinking we would try again on his next checkup.

From all my research, this vet is no yahoo... she has experience with Parsons. Everyone in Austin recommended her. The vet said that she is calling experts for further advice.

I have only ever had vets draw blood from under the tail (tail vein). I havent heard of them drawing blood from other locations before. It is a large vein under the tail and is pretty easy to access.
