what have you learned from the forums?

I've learned that there are very educated, smart, friendly, dorky, kind, freaky, HOT, silly and crazy Cham enthusiasts throughout the world! Some of us should be institutionalized! :D

Oh, Max. You might as well tell everyone that you're talking about me. ;)

I second this statement.

I have learnt that one chameleon isn't enough! :D Seriously, though, I have learnt to feed a female less and keep her cooler. My second female lived twice as long as my first as a direct result of what I learnt on here. I have also learnt that you can make wonderful friends in other countries that you probably won't ever meet, yet feel you have known all your life.:D

I am loving that new avatar!

First, I originally heard about the forum from a Petsmart employee who I'm sure is on here somewhere. He was a great source of information when I needed advice about my new little one. As for what I've learned, thats a tough one.

I have learned that there are still some great people out there, even though I still have my doubts from time to time. I have learned that sarcasm is still very important to me! I have learned that I am still not great at taking pictures. I have learned that I will spend a sick amount of money on a little green monster! I have learned that I can have a forum family, complete with all types of friends including scaly ones. Mostly, I have learned that even the most skilled keepers have their tough days, and although this is not easy, it is definitely worth the effort!;)

Oh, and one more thing... I have learned that I am addicted to this forum almost as much as keeping chams! ;)

All related to my 10 mo old panther chameleon Pablo I recently got from a random person on Craigslist about a month ago:

Just this week...
  • To remove the plastic cover on the Zilla brand florescent light fixture to let the UVB pass through. How the previous owner managed to keep this chameleon alive with no UVB remains a mystery. I also learned that some feel the default Zilla 25 Tropical bulb may be more bad than good (so maybe it was GOOD that the plastic was filtering it ). Time for a new bulb anyway, Reptisun 5.0 recommended on this forum now in place.
  • All about edema and over supplementation. Pablo started getting a small swollen bulge in his neck late last week. His previous owner used dry Fluker's gutload and calcium with D3 at every feeding. She was feeding him 5 medium crickets every other day. I went a little nuts on the nutrients, I think. Started gutloading crickets with wet and dry homemade load and dusting with Repashy Calcium Plus (the one for every day use). Using the advice on the forum I just ditched the Repashy entirely for the short term. In 3 days the swell is almost gone. It's pretty clear that over supplementation was the issue. I think I will try the plain calcium and infrequent D3/Multi vitamin approach moving forward.

In the previous month or so I've been (mostly) lurking about here:

Everything else. Enclosure, feeding, how to keep feeders, gut loading, lighting, live plants, water... everything.

Oh, I've also learned about lots of things I want to buy... ;)

This forum has been totally invaluable to me over the past two years! I have learned so much, more all the time. Mostly, I learned there are crazy, reptile loving people like myself, with real Passion for the well-being of such amazing creatures. I may not post, but read every day, and love watching all of the health stories, personal stories and the growth in information/education. I am terribly grateful for all of the contributors and the friendly and amazing people on here. Merry Christmas and thanks for sharing the hobby!

I learned why ReptiSUN is better than ReptiGLO

I learned that some people have trouble raising healthy chameleons without the use of preformed vitamin A (how strange!)

I have learned that we (even the best of us) are responsible for a very large pile of dead and sick chameleons every single year.

I've learned almost everything I know about chameleons here, and I keep on learning things all the time!:D

I learned that the very annoying, often repeated advice to "see a vet right away" and to "have fecal exams done" are 2 of the wisest pieces of advice dispensed to cham owners.

Unfortunately, I also learned that those pesky, aggressive yellow-jacket wasps won't hesitate to sting a chameleon and the results can be fatal :(

In short, virtually everything useful that I have learned about keeping chameleons healthy has more often than not come from kind fellow forum members who took the time to share their knowledge with me and others.

Thank-you everyone!

I've learned that in spite of all the information out there its still necessary to be able to talk to people directly who keep chameleons themselves to learn.

Everything I know about taking care of my guy, I learned here. This has been the best place for information! I really don't think I would have felt secure enough in my knowledge of chameleon husbandry without this forum, and most likely would have never got a chameleon. When I decided it was time to think about getting one(I've wanted one nearly my whole life), I knew I had to research...A LOT!!! I began searching the internet and kept finding conflicting info on different sites. I kept seeing the forum, so I joined and I am so glad I did. I am still pretty new to chameleons, and am still learning, but it feels great to be able to help new and prospective owners like I was helped when I first came here.

I have learned that I can never learn enough about chameleons! I have learned boat loads of invaluable knowledge from those more experienced than I and am so grateful this community is so open to sharing. There is always something more to learn. :)
