why??

It could be a majority of things, but a light goes off in my head when asked this question..

How hot is the basking area? Try and cool her off and get her out from under the heat bulb.

i'll give that a try. i just did that. if i had her outside for a couple of hours i dont need to have the light on, right?

female 2 months Veiled chameleon i've had her for about a week. right now due to financial status i only feed her crickets i'm waiting on the repti-cal d3, i usually feed her about 10am i've seen her eat 3 then i put couple more in there if she's still hungry i'll say she eats about 5 or so, i feed the crickets Flukers High Calcium Cricket Diet and Flukers Calcium Cricket Quencher. I dont handle her much i dont want to upset her much, but i do handle her. her fecal looks like a dark brown looks kind of like a sack and something yellow attached. The cage is all around cage about 2 maybe 3 feet high about foot maybe a bit more wide. there is a blue day light bulb i'll have the light on for about 12 hours if i dont take her outside. the average temp i would have it is about 80-85F. at night about 70F, i have a thermometer that sticks to the inside of the cage but i'm expecting a digital one that reads temp and humidity. yes live plants schefflera arboricola and dracaena. its located corner of room almost to the corner of the window its about 3 feet off the floor and there isn't really much activity besides 2 people walking in and out of the room. she is by our tv. she might get air from the AC vent but i dont think to much because the room gets pretty warm and stuffy at times, I live basically desert area so the temp goes up.

The cage thermometer that you have, is it near her basking spot or is that a reading of the ambient temperature of the cage? If the ambient temperature of the cage is 80-85 I would assume your chameleons basking spot is higher then that. If you havent done so already, measure the closest branch/vine/leave that is under the basking spot and make sure it isnt over 85 degrees.

My came, within a month of owning had the same problem with the mouth always being open. I filled out the questions and received corrections on about 7 things I had wrong with my setup. The two that I think were the cause of the open mouth where basking too hot (mine was 90 at the time) and not enough misting.

You are about to get a load of help from these members, pay close attention and follow carefully and your cham will be in good hands

EDIT- also, if possible, provide a picture of your chameleons enclosure setup

Step 1: Get it away from the Ac vent. There needs to be 0 draft. Ac kills chams Ive heard from many people.

Step 2:the yellow part should be white. yellow is dehydrated. thats bad.

Step 3:Fluckers is terrible. if you are lazy or busy(both in my case) buy cricket crack from tiki tiki or some dude off this site his name slips me i haven't been on here in awhile as i got my cham care kinda masted :) Otherwise make your own cocktail of greens for the crickets.(recipes all over this and other sites). use fresh oranges for water source. slice it, give the crickets half and you eat the other half. good nutrition for you too!!!

Thats all that jumped out at me after reading it once. Im no cham expert but i know all that stuff is serious business. Open mouth usually means too hot but it can also mean he is pissed at something. Make sure your cham is in a low traffic area to avoid stress. I keep mine in a closet that i took the door off and replaced with a black curtain.

just feeding crickets is fine in my opinion but you gotta gut load em. if you are taking him outside then you dont need the uvb bulb so you are fine there but you ALSO want calcium with NO d3. Also repcal makes a multivitamin most pros recommend. Ok Ive yammered on enough Hope your guy is ok!!! If he is indoors then you need the d3. If you dont take him out really often i recommend a uvb bulb.

Step 3:Fluckers is terrible.

Why is it terrible... Its a good amount of crude protein and calcium levels are good at 8% to .6% phosphorus... And its vitamin content isn't too bad.... Im not saying its great as the ONLY part of a gut load but why is it terrible?

So to start you DO need to upgrade your cricket diet... Try cricket crack or raw stuff like oranges for moisture, apples, collard greens, alfalfa, zucchini, bee pollen etc....
You need to have a supplement schedule such as one like this
1) Calcium W/O D3 at every feeding
2)Calcium WITH D3 twice a month
3)Multivitamin twice a month
She is definitely dehydrated and needs a good misting schedule a couple times a day (letting the cage dry between) and maybe a dripper to allow more chances to drink.... I didn't see any lighting information... What are you using for heat and are you using a UVB of any kind?

dude you got me but people say it causes gout and something else. Again not an expert i can only regurgitate things experts have posted on here. And the fluckers water cubes breed bacteria that the crickets get and pass to the cham.
fluckers is bad for chams all i know sorry i cant help more mate.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my chameleon's eye puffs up at random moments, i read on the internet that it means they are missing some humidity but on my humidifier it is perfectly fine but since it said that i thought maybe if i misted her it'll stop and it did but then it would happen again, am i fixing the problem or should i do something different to permently stop it? it iches her ALOT:confused: HELP!!!

i have a little cheap thermometer that sticks on to the cage, it pretty much only reads the whole cage temp. i ordered another one that reads humudity and temp, i should get it soon. do i mist her or just the plants?
