Your Chameleons Personality

I just got a purple bar from a member here and this guy is crazy! He always turns to his darker colors when i look at him. When I try to hold him hes always on the move like hes trying to get away from me! i just want him to chill out lol.

I have another baby panther and she loves me shes always coming up to the top of her cage when i open it. she hangs out with me and is never afraid.

So does your chameleon act?

Our Girls come to us as soon as the cages open. I don't know why actually. I've read on the forums that girls can be especially upset by their caregivers. They seem fine with handling, although we keep it at a minimum. The temptation of course is to handle an animal that shows signs of friendliness but we're not willing to take any chances by over-doing it.

Our boys love hand feeding and take water directly from spray bottles through their screen. They gape when we need to remove them from their homes but are very quickly forgiving once picked up. One particularly liked biting me and did in fact draw blood, but within a few weeks tolerates me well enough to my satisfaction.

Our most emotional boy is Bodhi, a Nosy Be whose colors changed from light to dark with every interaction. However, now Bodhi is getting used to us and his colors are less "threatened" in the past weeks. I believe this is due to a conditioned response to our feeding him and he perhaps has come to understand in his own way that we mean no harm to him.

You can imagine what it would be like if you were taken from your surroundings and put into a new home without your consent. The way I look at it is this, it might actually be terrifying for our little guys to come to their new home, so I try not to add to the stress by imposing myself on them (even though they are so adorable I want to hold them 24/7). I give them all the comforts of home and pray their adjustment is to their eventual happiness.

It sounds like you've done a great job with your first Cham and I'd be willing to bet that it will eventually go the same with your Purple Bar too. Please post pictures when you can! And congrats on your new baby!

I hope others post to this thread. Not having a Cham yet, I am wondering what the temperaments of the different species are. Seems to be something the books don't talk about. I know they are not creatures to curl up by the fire with, but I would like something that isn't too aggressive.

you make a good point. I've looked around for information on difference species temperment, and haven't really found anything. Can anyone offer advice on which species are known for being more on the friendly side, and which aren't?

I would sum up my chams personality as 'Homer simpson', hence the name!
Loves food, lazy, gets into 'D'oh' situations alot! :D

My Panther started out as a huge jerk. When I would look at him or come near him, he would be dark, gaping at me, trying to bite me.

Would not eat in front of me.

Would not drink in front of me.

As he got older, his temperament has changed. He now handfeeds, walks to his mister face first, and hasn't bitten me in a very long time.

I guess this is typical of panthers as they grow, some of them chill out, but then again, some don't.

My little boy Sharma is fairly open to me being near him when his cage is closed. When i do daily cleaning and feeding he is Ok, i have been working with him on hand feeding but he isn't for that just yet. Handling him is a battle i wish he was more ok with it because the weather out here is great and would love to put him in the sun, but i feel like the hassle is not worth it, along with the stress on him.

My girl Chamille who i just got 2 week ago has a funny trait of turning into a stick when i come near so i leave it at that lol!!;)

Every single one of mine, past and present, has had a different demeanour.

Some are more aggressive and territorial, some are slow and hardly react to anything, others are shy, some are what people would (wrongly) refer to as friendlly, some are interested in leaving the cage while others will generally NOT do so, some eat well and some are picky...

my experience is mostly with panthers, but in my limited vielded experience, they seem more aggressive than panthers.

What kind is yours?

Sorry, Homer is a veiled. Hes approaching 7 months now, gets a little stroppy on occasion, mostly if hes been resting and I disturb him to get him outside or clean the cage. Not as defensive, so far, as people have descibed. :)

Lucy

Lucifer, (Named because shes evil) Is nice, but if your hand gets too close.....HIHHSHSHSHSHSHSH. Lol. shes nice besides that. She CANT STAND being handled. And when she sees my black camera, she goes all: GOOO AWAAAYYYYY*TTRG*UF *epic hiss* frk^hRTI. She bit it once. Shes curious lately... Is hand fed, but if im in a rush, 2 crix free ranged. but i usually have time to feed her. I've mAneged to pick her up 3 times. first two, she was calmish, but on saturday, she went all black and puffy. so, she hates everything. Hence the evil name, lucifer. (lucy for short)

Our veiled Gizzy is 8 months and she is lovely. She eats from our hands or free range and lets us know when she wants to play out - this is becoming more infrequent as she gets older. She has a lovely nature and is hilarious to watch, but god forbid should we put our hands in her house

My PB Ambanja is mean. He doesnt eat infront of me and always walks towards the back oh the enclosure.

I hope he get nicer when he gets bigger. :D

Thaxter (male panther) is very laid back and mellow. His predecessor, Saccardo, (male Jackson's) was not aggressive, but was very much a "hands off" chameleon (Thaxter is liable to come climb on you when you get near, whether you had that in mind or not, and to be reluctant to get off). The pygmies are mysterious, and I believe they are Plotting Something ("Are you pondering what I'm pondering?").

lucifer. (lucy for short)

LOL this is my cat's name..Same reason.

My Veiled wants to eat me. One of the Melleri wanted to eat me but is starting to settle down. The other is quite "friendly".

Melleri are known for their not so Cham like behavior. There are a few other species, others will chime in as to what they are. I can't look them up ATM.

Your best bet for a non agro Cham is to be patient about getting one. Keep your eyes peeled here and on kingsnake for people selling holdbacks that are advertised as friendly. You can also contact any of the site sponsor breeders asking about this.

Keep in mind that nothing with theses guys is a guarantee when it come to behavior. A known "friendly" Cham, my love his owner but decide he hates you. Could be as simple as the color of the shirt you are wearing. Also, males sometimes loose that friendly demeanor after they have time to mature and testosterone kicks in.

Sounds like my parrots. One hates people wearing red. God forbid if I forget and walk in the house wearing a red jacket. My Cockatoon hates me on and off at random. One minute she wants kisses, the next she's dive bombing my head and trying to take chunks out of my scalp. Hey ... at least chameleons can't fly:)
