For how much I thought this project was finished, it certainly isn't...
many plants have been moved around and I added several walkway/vines on the lower half to up the usable area.
My pitcher plants (except 1) are all failing miserably, but everything else is doing "okay".
I still haven't...
its called "free-ranging" and some of us do it :)
it is generally for more advanced keepers since it is harder to monitor their light exposure/feeding and of course....they tend to wander off ^^
This is one, of several, reasons I do not recommend the "2-in-1" bulbs.
@Pindingy: I'm not sure on the warranty you are referring to, but UVB bulbs, on avg, have a shelf life of 6 months. I'm quite certain that the 1yr warranty would not apply in this sense, or we'd all have permanently...
Airplants typically refer to the genus Tillandsia and are safe. I have personally used them for several years in almost all of my builds from dart frogs to pygmy to my current panther free range build.
I don't know of any tillandsia that is not safe.
There are many other plants that can be...
I LOVE IT!!!!
I have had some dreams of a somewhat similar setup at my parent's house where they have this weird elevated window with an alcove that would be so perfect......
alas I live in a tiny apartment :p
I'm not too familiar with veileds, but I was under the impression that they only laid 2 or so clutches a year?
Regardless of that, if she is repeatedly attacking/hissing over several attempts, to me this means she is not receptive and I would stop trying for a week or two at least before...
I think it is very important to ask "what lights for whom" (that is, what lights do the chams need, what lights do the plants need, what lights do we need to make it presentable, etc.) The question of "shade benefit" vs "light benefit" and the best ratio of each is also a very interesting one...
The care you listed isn't perfect, but it is mostly on point and correct. Short of a disease of some kind (which I'm assuming your vet would have spotted), I think it would be worthwhile to find out what exactly your daughter did (or rather, didn't) do while you were gone. Is your vet a...
The link you posted is for a mobile site, here is the link to the actual video:

This is curious....can anyone explain it? I have noticed that my male panther has begun doing...
I don't have much to say about the wet vs dry gutload, but are you perhaps downplaying suggestion #4?
providing liquid calcium via water to my chameleon....how exactly would you do this or dose this...? Perhaps if it is a special care chameleon, but most chameleons are given drinking water...
I would agree on the vet visit + fecal exam. Especially from what you said earlier about him vomiting right when you got him, it would further lead me to worry about the parasite issue. If I recall correctly you had your cham for like 1-2 days when the vomitting occurred (and your current post...
Looking at your setups, I still think you have *way* too much light and are just wasting money on electricity and bulbs imho. Your setups are not very densely planted and your plants are not particular "light needing" plants. If you were to change your setups down to 2x bulbs instead of 6x, I...
6500K is "ideal color" but 5000K is close enough that it will work well (I would not bother changing your bulb at this point until it burns out). In fact many manufacturers label 5000-7000K as "daylight".
14W should be bright enough for "basic" setups
Just a note: As someone else...
@AL: I'm not exactly sure what you mean by gritty. I would NOT consider it "display grade" by any standard, even with the correct dye/pigmentation put into it.
It tends to look flat, matte, and very dull.
In my experiences, the only reason a chameleon would leave a free range is if he is unhappy with it for one of many possible reasons....
specific ones I have learned of by experience:
-seeing another chameleon
-free range is too small
-temps are not good enough
-not enough feeders
-if...
He seems to feel like you need to go overkill on lighting, I don't believe you do as you said you already had a heat bulb and a UVB bulb right?
Any additional lighting would benefit your plant growth.
His point about bacteria/etc is correct to some extent, and since you have nothing planted...
Since lighting is special to me too, I can't help but chime in here... :)
Can you explain a little more on why you feel this much light is necessary? Just because the sun puts out this much does not mean we need to emulate it in our enclosures....unless it serves some actual benefit to the...
