are there "two" kinds of Jax X ? a big, and a little ?

I know this may be an odd question , but as I look at the babies from Olive and Oliver - the females get HUGE - Olive was very big, and all her girls also get very large - the males get big, but not OMG big - lol - I have other Jax from people who have sent them here, I understand some to the rescue being so small, due to bad health when they get here, but I have a few others who were cb, well cared for , but they are 1/2 the size the Olive/Oliver babies, only once did I see another female who got around Olives size - Sneaks - she was also a big girl - it just seems there are like 2 types - a big, and a small ?

I think it has to do with their individual night temps. They say, the lower the temp at night, the more it stimulates the appetite. So, if have a good 55-60°f night vs someone keeping them at 74-76°f room temp at night, HUGE size difference. Kinda' working the theory now with the ones I got from Carl. I am keeping them way colder at night than any previous ones I had. Seems to be working well. Both have been flourishing since arrival. Also, jax will eat more of a variety due to their size. You can offer them more foods you couldn't offer a panther (flies, beetles). We all know, variety is key. Depends on whether their owner goes that route. I have noticed from jax given to me, it can be hard to get one to grow much larger that when given to me. I think their first six months of growth is important.

In support of Jungle Fries theory, in the 90's when we got Jacksons from Mt. Kenya they were huge compared to the later imports from Hawaii or Florida.
I live on the central coast of Ca. where the night temps are 50-55 in the summer, even cooler in the winter. All the babies grew to be the same size as the parents except the male I gave to my sister who lives in southern Ca.. She kept him inside at night and put him out only during the day. He looked like a runt compared to his siblings. I know this is a small sample size but....

My Monty was only ever 103g at the most. He was normal size as far as I know. His sisters, however are MUCH bigger than he was, one is really very large. I think it also has a lot to do with the body shape of the females, they are always more rounded than the males. Even with Veileds, my females were both a lot bigger in girth than my male. He was bigger in height and size, but the girls were a lot more rounded. I think females tend to eat a lot more too.

welllllll - LOL - I keep my guys a bit on the hotter side of life- they can go to as warm as 85 , or as low as 62 - its up to them - I think I just raise freaks of nature - lol - but the bigger Jax all seem to seek the hotter temps , while the smaller ones like it cooler - these guys are still housed sep/ from the big FR - but in the big fr - that is where I notice the bigger ones staying in the warmer part of the fr - there are enough basking spots + one extra, but they all clump together under one light - and the "cooler" Jax all sit lower in the big plants - the only one who goes all over is the male - he is high, low, SIDEWAYS - :p at first I thought it was because Olive was a older WC , and her age had something to do w/ it as well as being a WC - but then her baby females get big pretty young - the boys all have seemed to stay smaller, and grow slower at first - I dont know who the Daddy was of her first clutch she ever had but Oliver was the father of the rest , he was a CB - and there seemed to be no difference in who the father was for the girls - its just odd I think that there is such a size difference - Sneaks never had any babies- so I can not compare anything w/ her - all these other girls are about 1 - 3 yrs old - depending on the cham - but all are cb but one- and even the one I am unsure of , I know is about 3, and she is tiny looking if she sits next to Olives daughter who is 1/2 her age - I like to "study" them, and part of what I keep seeing is this size thing - just thought it was odd- but now you have me wanting to toss the babies in the snow- LOL - I started a breeding project to try to bring out the reds - but lost the breeding group - maybe I will try for Ousti size Jax - :p

can you post pictures of them? I have heard a couple of times that the ones of hawaii are smaler than the ones of africa

I have heard the opposite - lol - I was told Olive came from Hawaii, but I really think she came from Fla - but who knows - another reason to just go w/ CB ;) I will get some pics of the "gang" later today :) I do no think any from Africa have been imported in a long time - they are invasive in Fla and Hawaii - I think that is where most come from - but not sure , maybe someone else can add more info on the source of wc Jax ~ =)

I've owned a couple big Jackson females too. I know what you're saying, they aren't all like that. I really like the big ones and they usually do really good having babies. I also like Jackson's that are a little different like the ones you've had with red eyes or ones with a lot of blues or yellows. I'd like to see more pictures too.:)

I recently had a chance to import some from Africa. These were HUGE like twice the size of the ones I commonly see here in the US. Due to the high cost I was unable to find any interest in them. I don't have the space to keep them or I would have gotten some just to introduce these new blood lines here. The ones from Hawaii and Florida I suspect have far fewer different blood lines thus inbreeding occurs and this effects the overall size and health of these populations. Those that I have seen from Hawaii all seem to be smaller but I have seen a few from Florida ( or so I was told ) and they seem to be a bit larger . I suspect that is due to some more recently released into Florida that have come from Africa or offspring from those animals / bloodlines and that could explain the larger size.
These thoughts are just from my observation and so are just my opinion and not based on any factual articles or documentation.

STEVE !!! lol -I had no idea you could get the Af/ Jax - ( I wish I would have known :p ) but you are right- I bet they would have been out of my price range :( I lost about all my reds - one male I have left has the reds, and one unrelated female - but she is the small - I want to aim for "big reds" - lol when you get time- I know you are BUSY busy boy- lol - just pm me the price of the Jax ( if you can still get them, and I may do something stupid- LOL ) do they have any reds on them ?

I am glad you say that - I was not sure if I was SEEING them big, or they WERE big- lol - I know Olive was a freak - she was just HUGE - I was starting to worry she was crossed with a dinosaur - lol I was so upset at loosing my breeding group - but she and Oliver left me 2 wonderful babies to start again - and this is the first male I have had w/ red eyes- and red body color- but he may outgrow that - ? time will tell-
I am going to get pics later today of who is left - I got a new phone- and for some reason, I am having a hard time getting it to download to my pc ever since it did an up date- the pics go to a lost file ??????????
