Beardies

I went bioactive with Opal.
The first day she was digging new tunnels under all her homes. Lol. It was so cute.
She seems to like it.

Since she has eaten almost all her hibiscus, but only nibbled a little on her pothos.

Just a question, and I hope it's not to off topic, but for those who know, How do wild bearded dragons behave towards people?

Are they completely different from their captive counterparts, or do they possess a natural curiosity and friendly personality towards people?

I would say somewhat different. YouTube has several vids (from different perspectives) on beardies in the wild. Captives still possess their counterparts' wild instincts at birth; it's the same patience and perseverance (as with other reptiles, e.g. chameleons) that... persuades(?) them to tolerate us.

I think one of the main differences with beardies is their "chill". Once fear of humans is overcome, they seem willing to spend some time hanging with us. I suspect much of this is just that we're a convenient warm place to sit on, we often feed them "treats", and they get a chance to do a little exploring. BICBW.

I know I promised photos, the weekend just got away from me.
I'll post some when I get home from work, so in about 4 hours.

I was very disappointed that she ate her entire hibiscus. She has also eaten most of her pothos.
It looked very beautiful when I first did it, but has since become very unappealing. Lol.
I'd like to find a plant she won't ravage so her enclosure can have some nice aesthetics.

I will say, she does seem to still enjoy it. She has buried the opening of her box-house, besides a slight amount that she slips into. And same with the half log.

Wow! Looks like Opal had a blast! I had planned to plant some herbs for Spike to eat...parsley, cilantro, basil. I was also going to put in some succulents like aloe, echeveria and various grasses.

Maybe if I put so many plants that she can't eat them all, I will have a better time. Haha.

Can I use lemon grass?

I’ve found some conflicting info on which plants are safe for beardies and which aren’t, so with that being said, lemon grass is ok as long as they don’t eat too much. I was going to look for some of the decorative grasses and also plant some ‘cat’ grass (wheat or rye).

I honestly would never have thought of doing bioactive for a beardie. I wouldn’t dare do it for our little lady with her being a rehome from a friend. She freaks at anything new in the enclosure.

I truly believed that Spike would enjoy it, but it was the exact opposite. Thinking up other ways to make his enclosure more interesting for him. I’ll just have to make sure he gets to keep his blanket and plushie.

I have to admit, I get a little chuckle out of people trying to make bioactive enclosures for large omnivorous animals, then get slightly shocked that they come home to a moonscape.

And before anyone takes this the wrong way, I had a common snapping turtle,(Chelydra serpentina) and he loved his veggies, so no matter how amazing I scaped his enclosure, a few hours later everything was all gone.

And before people think about fake plants, I couldn't keep anything "green" with him, or any of my other turtles, they thought it was food and tried to eat it.

I'd guess you should just try making an epic wood scape.

Just my perspective as an outsider.
