Dehydration?

Hope he gets better.

Am I reading correctly that there is very low ambient humidity where you live? Have you considered having a humidifier in the room?

I make my own drippers - meaning I can make them as big as I like - with valves that allow me to adjust the drip rate (fast initially, slow thereafter). Mine only drip for a couple hours in the morning, and again for less time in the later afternoon. This is more than enough for my chameleons, but its not overly hot here and humidity is naturally 30+% (that's before the dripping, plants, spraying, humidifier)

You might like to get a hydrometer/thermometre that keeps high and low readings. That way you can always know how hot it got while you were away or asleep (or how cold), and how high/low the humidity has been. I very much recommend these. I have two in ever cage, plus one in the middle of the room in which the cages are all kept.

I don't think in all my time here, I have ever seen a picture of syn's enclosures.

Not saying anything bad about them, but I've never seen a picture before, and when asked, sometimes the situation is glazed over.

I think you are right-I cannot seem to find any pics of Syn's enclosures either, but in her profile, the Veiled seems to be against something that looks glass.

Syn-what are you housing these guys in and what kind of thermometer to you have???

He passed away during the night. Thanks for your help guys.. I can't bring myself to get another for a long time.

I'm sorry for your loss. The death and the condition seemed completely out of the blue. Is this the one that escaped the other day and barfed water?

Sorry to hear that Syn. Hopefully members can assess the situation and try to see where you went wrong. I hope your enclosures are adequate for the remaining chameleon.

I guess I am a little confused here? That Panther should certainly be able to handle a few hours of temps in the 90's.
The pics make it look near death-you often see that spotting on dieing chameleons.
Could something else have happened?

Everything else except temperature was fine in my cage.

Syn, it looks like he got way too hot. Are you sure that he did not get over 90? I would get him too a vet; keep him cool, lots o water... Just keep an eye on him, if he makes a turn around he might not have to go, but better safe than sorry.

Other than the really bad color and closed eyes he looks good. Good size, head not sunk in or anything, which is why I think it was something that came on quick to sent him to the bottom... Try to keep him cooler from now on.

I was going to get him to a vet as soon as I could have today. It was just freak temps today. I don't get it. It's 55 degrees now today.

Hope he gets better.

I have two humidifiers, it hardly works to keep the humidity at 50%.

If you can give me the website or name of one of those hygo/thermometers please tell me.

It's a cage from LLL. The large size. Got a whole setup from Chad with the panther.

LLL cages, flukers digital.

In Lowes or Walmart, I had better luck at lowes, they have thermometer/hydrometers with probes.

Look in the gardening section, by all the weather monitoring stuff and decorations. There should be one called, "Acu-Rite". Digital, about the size of your palm. It shows highs and lows throughout the day and came recommended to me by a mod.

I think it was like 10 bones or something like that. Pretty reasonable considering it's functionality and accuracy.

Syn-what did the temps get too? I keep a Nosy out year round here and the temps are in the mid 90's all summer. I would think to do damage your temps would have had to be in the 100's for a sustained period and this all just is not making sense.

I am sorry for your loss, I know how hard you try.

Julirs, perhaps it had gotten hotter. I'm not sure anymore. Either way he just got too hot.

Is there any way to be 100% sure it's dead? Ever since I was little I always told myself that they were just faking it so I wouldn't get as upset as I am now, and if I do bury him soon I want to make sure he's not just taking really small breaths and tricking me.. I know it's stupid but I've always said this to myself.. haha..

Here's a little trick I used to keep my room cooler in the AZ hot months. The AC never reached my room growing up.

I used to put jugs of water outside every night, or in the fridge or freezer. In the morning I would bring them back inside and place a few around my bed or computer. It doesn't seem like much, but you'd be surprised how it can help cool the ambient air down.

Usually I would have at least one jug frozen so I could run a fan over it, blowing cool air around my room.

It wasn't much, but if you find the ambient temps getting hot, it could help.

I actually understand how you are feeling. I usually just leave them in their cages until I am 100% sure. Then you can bury him. They will continue to change colors over the hours. They often turn black and then back to their brilliant colors.

Well he's turning black alright. How long until he goes blue again?

Opted out of a necropsy. 75$ + 200$ if he wants to send in samples costs a bit much for peace of mind in my opinion. Thanks everyone.

after reading almost the whole thread i have to say, i really dont think it was the tempurature. It could have been possible long term dehydration that finally got to him, but i could be wrong. I have accidentally left my room window closed one day which means my room gets HOT and the temp in the room was about 90, cage temp was like 95 and basking spot was 105 and my nosy be was def dehydrated, but did not turn all white nor did he die after i got him in the shower and he drank. Look more into everything to figure out the problem so it wont ever happen again. I am really sorry for your loss, i understand how hard it is because Nosy Be's ROCK! they are so nice and playful. Hope you find out the problem again and hope you feel better :)

He looked fine in the morning and when I got him he was suken-eyed and white. Maybe there's something I'm missing. But it's too late to fix anything. I'm going to my dad's house to bury him later. Thanks again every.

I know its too late for the lil guy but if you figure out it was something else, that would prevent ne thing like this form happening again if you ever decided to get another cham
