Did I do something wrong?

Very handsome little man! He looks real healthy, I would only suggest letting him be a fatty :p My guy ate up to 25 crickets a day sometimes when he was a few months under a year and growing faster.
Giving the freedom to eat a lot may bulk him up, (anyone correct me if I'm wrong) I don't think you need to worry about controlling food intake until around a year.
The vet i go to said to let them eat as much as they please when I brought it up once (I'll still only give Clyde like 10-15 a day unless he's acting super hungry though).
 
40 grams doesn't sound terrible. And to answer your question about fecals without a vet check up, you have to ask the vet. Some will, some wont. Some only will after the first check up. It just depends.
