Does $84.99 sound like a lot to ship??

As said above, it's "dimentional weight" - pay by volume, not weight. Most of the space taken up is light stuff, so their limiting factor is volume, not weight, hence the stress on volume.

Ship in the smallest container possible. In the summer and winter it hard, as insulation is necessary. In the fall and spring, shipping a smaller, uninsulated box is easy, provided temps are good.

Try to find someone with a UPS account, and ship with that account. That's how I was able to ship cross country for about $60. I used my father's account.

i dont know if it's been said yet but that doesnt sound high at all. The price you quoted sounds like a medium sized box next day to a residence to me. UPS has quite a few factors that go into the cost of shipping, the first being whether or not it is a business account. Weight and size of the item being shipped is obviously factor. there are also various kinds of Next day shipping, early am (before 8am), regular next day (10:30 i think), and next day saver (next day before 3pm).

The distance shipped plays a role but not as large as you might think. I'm assuming that you are sending this to a residence which usually runs more expensive. One usually lesser known factor is how close the final destination is to an actual UPS hub. Small towns and rural areas are usually more expensive because the trip from the hub to the delivery destination is longer.

disclaimer~all this is based off personal use of ups worldship for our business. I'm sure personal drop offs and shipping runs a little different but i'd imagine many of the same principles apply.

Well all I know is that I have shipped two bearded dragons, two chameleons and now my baby bearded dragon was shipped to me all using USPS and as long as you get it to them by 1 or 1:30 they gurantee arrival be noon the next day. also they will let you call in and if it arrives early you can pick it up. So out of the five or so that I have shipped or has been shipped to me they all arrived happy and healthy. USPS is the cheapest way to go and so far they have not let me down delivering all my animals in good time and have had no problems.
