Eye infection?

My 1 year and 8 month old veiled has what appears to be some sort of eye infection. I noticed this a few weeks ago and assumed it was part of his shedding, but now I realize that it is definitely not natural. His right eye is clouded over with discharge, but his left eye is perfectly normal. Because he can't see out of this eye, he's often gripping his own legs (assuming they are branches) when he climbs and this causes him to fall. This really worries me since I know how fragile chameleon bones are. Is there anything I can do to flush out his eye or should I see a vet first? (In the morning I will post a picture of his eye.)

I'd take it to a vet regardless... Chameleons rely heavily on their eyesight I'd not risk that.

Agreed....get to a vet as soon as possible. An eye infection if not treated can go septic and cause you to lose your cham.

Bubba came back from the vet yesterday afternoon and is doing great. The vet cleaned his eye with a wet q tip and then prescribed antibiotic eye drops for him for 10-14 days. He's doing well with the eye drops since then and his eye is much more open and natural looking. They aren't sure why it happened since there are so many causes, but probably the most likely is that a particle or something got caught in his eye. Any suggestions on how I could prevent this from happening in the future?

Sometimes it just happens i think something small like that is not anything you did so its not really anything that you could do to prevent it im vary happy to hear a good recovery and hopefully many yrs of healthy and happiness to you and you chameleon

Get a much larger screened enclosure.

Rae Rae...you're cutting in on someone else's thread which makes it difficult for us...please start your own thread by clicking on forums then on the appropriate forum. At the top of that forum you will see a button that says start new thread. Click on that.

You didn't tell us how old your chameleon is or anything about the temperatures etc and without the whole picture it's hard to know why the chameleon isn't eating. Please answer the questions in the how to ask for help thread at the top of the health forum.

I have dealt with eye infection before. The best way to prevent it is to make sure you are misting enough for them to have a chance to clean out their eyes as well as making sure all your cage stuff is cleaned well. Honestly, after going through what I did, I finally got an automatic mister. Best decision I ever made. Hand misting just doesn't give them the right conditions or enough time to clean out their eyes well enough.

Definitely agree- I've had an automatic mister for over a year (the exo terra monsoon) and I love it. Never had any problems and it mists him while I'm busy during the day, which is great. I'm also going to dust his food with vitamin A supplements since that's what the vet recommended. Do you think that's all I can do?

Make sure to give him a few good long mistings every day of at least 5 minutes and do what the vet told you. What are the drops he prescribed?
