Freak Accident!!!!!!!! Need Help!!

I just realised you posted pictures. Poor l'il cham. I know the pic is a little graphic, but I found it rather interesting! I didn't realise that they have that much tongue packed away in their mouths. We are used to seeing only split second glimpses of tongue, so, as gruesome as it is, I learnt something from your photo. Thank you for sharing.

Trace: The Bruise is from us giving her Fluids and her Baytril Injection, and No she's not with my Male, she's in her own cage just like all chams should be. :)

Where did that large bruise on his belly come from and could it be related to the tongue injury? I know there is still some skepticism on whether that is a female or not but is s/he housed with your other male?

Good luck!

ha yeah the tounge is rather intresting..Lots of veins and such..Never knew there was that many! :)

Sorry If im intruding, would it be a bother for me to see your current set up?

You are having an issue now so you cant really say that. Just because you don't want to hear about it doesn't make it any better. You obviously know you need to have more cover or you wouldn't have brought it up. Wouldn't you rather be safe that sorry..er? I'm not trying to stir anything up but I have read these threads and I felt I needed to say something after seeing that setup pic, the problem is there is not enough shade and she does look pretty big in there, what are the dimensions?

yeah well everyone does everything different.....I dont have to explain myself to anyone..plus what are the chances of this happening??? Search yourself..there's only a handful of people it's happened to..and I'm sure it happens in the wild to..they just die in that situation..I had more cover, but she hates it..she was always on top and wouldnt move..this gives her some space to move around and about her cage...Pic quality isnt great..but there a bunch of Thick leaves for her to hide in if she chooses to....For those of you who like to bash cham keepers for whatever happens to your cham..I just want to let you know, your not above any of us here...Were all here for the Love of Chams, and just because something :BAD: happens were blamed at a moments notice...But thankfully most everyone on my thread really cares..

I don't see how a cham biting their tongue off could be a result of poor husbandry.

Even if something is amiss or not according to FAS (Forum Accepted Standards ((I think I just coined a new phrase, lets see if it catches on)), It would be really hard to show that it was the cause.

:) Nicely Said...

Tonight I gave her, her first dose of Oral Baytril diluted with Baby Food, which she took okay...I also put a dish of a few crix and supers..Wish I had horns or silks.."Softer To Eat" for her.. :( No one has any right now..Anyways Also gave her a shower, but she did not drink...But everything is good so far. here's a couple Pics..If anyone has any suggestions on anything let me know. Oh..and I also have her in a temp. small cage for now untill she gets better..so if anything happens..she'll be okay..

im glad to hear that shes doing fine! when i first read this post i thought she was going to die. but you guys are in my prayers!:D
theres no doubt life will be very hard adjusting without her tongue but im glad she's alive. :)
GOOD LUCK:eek:

Unfortunately I don't know that I have any better of an answer on the best way to treat this issue.

While I don't see a problem with the entoglossal process being exposed itself, my concern is that the entoglossus extends into the mouth from the body cavity. Typically the tongue and its surrounding tissue sheath surrounds the entoglossal process thereby keeping the mouth separated from the rest of the body cavity by that tissue barrier. Unless the site where the entoglossal process extends into the mouth cavity is somehow sealed off, I can see problems with water, food and bacteria getting into the body cavity. I don't know if it would be possible to seal that entrance point around the entoglossus so suturing the tissue over the entoglossal process might be the best option.

I personally would not recommend having the entoglossal process removed. Movement of the entoglossal process (and by default the tongue, which is simply nested around it) is vital during food processing. Without it, there would be no way for the chameleon to move food down his/her throat.

Sorry I couldn't be more help,

Chris

its only 2 pm where you live in cali.?
its 11:10 at night in N.W. Indiana!:D

I think she meant it as: Day 2....night time update.

KShook, wow! I've been reading along but was a bit too shaken up to post (and didn't look at the pictures, thank you for the warning).

How scary. You've been so calm and such a good "emergency responder". I know that now it's (rightly) all about your chameleon, but when things settle down a bit, take a moment to recognize how well you coped with this. You did a great job.

I sort of want to be re-incarnated as your chameleon (sometime 25 to 35 years from now...).

Wow, that's horrible..but I am glad to see that she is getting better. My hopes go out to you and your cham on her making as full of a recovery as possible.

She did it a handful of time yesterday...I havent seen her do it today..but I was at work this morning..and since I've been home she hasnt done it..I can imagine she's pretty sore today though, We'll see what tomorrow brings. I'm going to give her SQ Fluids tomorrow to boost her hydration it should make her feel a little better.

Is she opening her mouth at all as though she is adjusting her tongue??

Thank You

I would like to take this time to Thank Everyone for there support and kind words. Without this forum I'm not sure what I would do..~*Possibly Go Crazy*~ Anyways, I've learned so much from everyone here, yes we all make mistakes, but we also learn from them. I cant tell you how many times a day I come on here to read posts or to post something I need help with...I'm always learning something new everyday, and better ways to do things. I believe thats why were all here, to learn different techniques and to gain more knowledge of Chameleon Husbandry..Of Course we all do things differently but ends up in the same result. "Happy, Healthy Chams" :) Okay Blllah Blllah....I'm getting all mushy..lol

~*THANK YOU MY CHAMELEON FAMILY*~
