I some large superworms, and I would like to gut load them, will they shed their skins more if i gut load?

thanks, im using green cubes from nature zone, i use the same on my crickets...have you used cubes for them before?

Simple answer is NO. It isn't a proper gutload for crickets or superworms! If you want something simple go with Bug Burger by Repashy. And from what I have experienced superworms will eat it a little bit but they still need a nutritious bedding/gutload that makes up most of their diet.

They will shed their skins when they grow.

What exactly is in the "green cubes"? Can you list the ingredients and the nutritional analysis info please?

you can use what you want, but look at all the other crap(including dyes) that is added to them Ingredients:
Carrageenan, whey protein, soy protein, maltodextrin, fructose, lecithin, locust bean gum, calcium lactate, spirulina, potassium sorbate, citric acid, ascorbic acid, methylparaben, FD&C Yellow 5, FD&C Blue 1.
I am sticking to my fresh fruits and vegetables!!! Its green because it is dyed with yellow and blue!!!

I have a whole gallon of the stuff, so I'm going to continue using it along with some lemons to cover the smell.

Here is the PROBLEM as I see it! And this goes for a LOT of people asking for help. You don't want help!! You want to be told you are doing things right. Your not looking for help your are looking for validation.

This is why MANY of the really experienced keepers just don't bother helping anymore.

I agree. You asked for help. We gave it to you. Yet you are still just going to use that junk that people told you not to use. Why did you even waste your time asking how to gutload superworms if you were just going to ignore us anyways?

When your done with your gallon of green gunk....... You could use SUPER CHOW..... Its made by the people who make Cricket Crack

I would gutload them with Organic veggies. Superworms devour my DinoFuel and DinoFuel is 100% Organic and has a 2+ year shelf life is kept refridgerated. It does not have carrageenan or any other garbage in it, like most the store bought stuff does. I personally avoid any product with a preservative. Heck, I have been keeping my superworms in a ground up marigold bedding.

Carrageenan is just a sea algae used to make it solid. It's like agar agar. Bug burger has carrageenan in it. The stuff in the total bites isn't particularly bad, but it's not really the best. It's better than nothing, by far! Go ahead and use the rest of the total bites, but you should try and gutload better in addition to the total bites.

Using a finely ground dry gutload for the bedding would be good, as well as using fresh veggies for moisture. Adding dinofuel or cricket crack/cricket crack's brand of superworm bedding together and maybe a bulking substrate (oats, bran, etc) would be great.

Edit: don't add bran or oats to the super chow, only if you decide to only use dino fuel.

And to add, the carrageenan is used to help keep the moisture in so that it can be a total source of food AND water.

Maybe so, but new research has proven that it causes cancer, especially because of the way it is processed from the red sea weed. Here are some links so you better understand my point.

Everything causes cancer now days. :)

I hadn't read about it before. Thanks for the links. I haven't read them yet, but do you know if it is just the process they use or if it's the actual plant itself?

Yep, everything seems to be a carcinogen these days. However, a lot of evidence is saying to avoid carrageenan all together. Studies in animals and humans have shows that it definitely causes intestinal ulcerations and cancers. In fact, the state of Ohio would not let me license a product with carraageenan in it. That is why I became interested in finding out why not.

I just finished the first link. I see now. Hmm, I wonder if people should be recommending bug burger now?

I have a little bag of those green cubes. Are they bad for my chameleon? I don't want to give her anything that will hurt her or make her sick. I primarily use different other gut loads besides those. I also have the flukers high calcium cricket gut load and I occasionally use different veggies.

wow, I didnt know that !

Thanks for posting the link to the sandrachameleons blog Clarkrw3! I always gutloaded by alternating fruits/veggies..., but I honestly had no idea about using nuts and grinding ingredients to make the substrate for the superworms. I have just used oatmeal! I feel like a bad mommy. Despite efforts made to do things right, I am always learning new things and ways to improve the care of my reptiles. This forum is great, thanks to all who try to help less experienced chameleon owners as best they can! Cheers!! now I am off to bulk barn to pick up some ingredients!
