Leopard geckos - blood splater mystery?

I went into my gecko room just now to check on everyone and this is what I find! There is blood splattered, like out of a scene from Dexter, all across one of the bins. This happens to be the bin where I currently have a male and female leopard gecko so that they may breed, so I immediately open it up and remove all the caves imagining that they've done damage to one another.

I checked both geckos, and they are both in perfect condition! Not a single scratch, bruise, nip, or cut anywhere. All fingers and toes counted for. I don't know what to make of it? And they've been a great couple so far, none of the really aggressive biting that I've seen my other pairings do.

My roommate made a comment about it being the female's first time, but this seems ridiculous!

I'm alarmed, but the geckos are absolutely fine as far as I can tell.

If they ‘look’ fine I would suspect one of the man or girl bits had a bit of trauma, more so the male. Blood just doesn’t appear out of thin air so somebody had/has a boo boo.

Geckos don’t have that first time experience and the resulting moments of awkwardness that come along with it. As far as I know anyhoo.

Check in the mouth and in the vent on both geckos. Get a loupe if you can and look for a scar or edge in the skin.

That is so delicately stated.:)

That's what I suspect, but there's nothing that I can see. I think I might just have to take them to the vet to have a professional give them a thorough looking-over.

They even checked the mouth and vent? Is it possible something else got in there and was massacred?

are you sure there not horned lizards? ;) they might have gotten the eye blood squirting gene...

Lol no! Someone on the gecko forums said that it happens to her first-year breeders sometimes. They'll ejaculate blood, especially if the female pulls away too early. And that it's nothing that should repeat itself or be worried about, so I guess that's it.

Yea, I didn't want to do it myself, so the vet opened their mouths and vents. He was completely at a loss too ($40 for nothing!) but at least I got a professional to tell me both were physically fine!

I'll post any info I find about the phenomenon on here, just for the future reference of anyone who is curious.

(edit) Well, didn't fnd much online. But I do know that it's called "hemo-ejaculation."
